In a comprehensive analysis released Wednesday, Clemson University researchers uncovered a sophisticated network of at least 62 social media accounts linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) spreading anti-Israel and anti-U.S. narratives amid ongoing regional tensions.
The investigation identified accounts across X, Bluesky, and Instagram that masqueraded as users from the Americas, England, Scotland, and Ireland while systematically disseminating content aligned with Iranian government interests. Though most accounts were relatively new, some dated back to December 2023, suggesting a planned, long-term influence operation.
“All these accounts systematically amplify politically divisive content and disinformation aligned with IRGC narratives, and they are designed to exploit regional fault lines to advance Iranian regime interests,” the report stated.
Researchers noted a strategic shift in messaging following the February 28 military strikes by Israel and the United States against Iran. Before the strikes, these accounts primarily focused on divisive domestic issues within Western countries. Afterward, they pivoted dramatically to promoting pro-Tehran messaging supportive of the Iranian regime.
“There is a coordinated inauthentic social-media campaign targeting online discourse around the war between Israel, the United States, and Iran,” the researchers concluded.
The influence operation utilized sophisticated techniques, including AI-generated imagery and fabricated videos to spread false information about military operations in the region. This represents an evolution in Iran’s digital influence tactics, combining technological sophistication with strategic messaging.
Of the identified accounts, 47 were found on X (formerly Twitter), nine on Instagram, and five on Bluesky. The scale of the operation was substantial, with Clemson researchers determining that the X accounts alone generated nearly 60,000 original posts. These were subsequently amplified through thousands of reposts, potentially reaching millions of users across the platform.
In response to these findings, social media platforms have taken varied approaches. Bluesky confirmed to Fox News Digital that all accounts identified in the report have been removed for violating community guidelines, demonstrating a swift response to the threat.
Meta, the parent company of Instagram, emphasized its policies against terrorism-promoting content while contextualizing the reach of the identified accounts. A company spokesperson noted that one-third of the Instagram accounts mentioned were not active during the conflict period, while the remainder had a combined following of fewer than 2,000 users.
“Meta prohibits coordinated inauthentic behavior and individuals and organizations tied to terrorism, and we remove violating accounts once we become aware of them,” the spokesperson stated.
This discovery comes at a particularly sensitive moment in Middle East relations, with tensions between Iran, Israel, and the United States at their highest point in years. The targeting of English-language social media suggests an attempt to influence Western public opinion and potentially shape policy responses.
The Clemson report highlights the continuing evolution of state-sponsored information operations, with researchers cautioning that vigilance remains essential. “It will be important to continue to monitor communities found to be at particular risk of foreign influence to mitigate potential harms to authentic discourse. This is particularly true at times of global crisis,” the report advised.
This influence operation represents part of a broader pattern of digital warfare that accompanies physical conflicts, where information spaces become contested terrain alongside traditional battlefields. As regional tensions persist, cybersecurity experts anticipate continued efforts by state actors to leverage social media for strategic messaging and narrative control.
