Iranian State Media Accused of Operating Spy Network in London

Security experts are warning that an Iranian spy ring is openly generating propaganda in London, with Tehran accused of exploiting Britain’s “permissive environment” through its state-backed broadcaster Press TV.

The English-language version of Iran’s state media has come under scrutiny for allegedly serving as a front for recruiting assets from its London studio, while its coverage of Jewish organizations appears to have created what some describe as a “target list for terrorists.”

Jonathan Hackett, a former American intelligence operative with two decades of experience running US Marine Corps intelligence operations, told The Telegraph that “from an Iranian perspective, London is a permissive environment,” adding that “Press TV not only has done clandestine work using these credentials but they also openly do things.”

Security experts allege that certain Press TV journalists function as talent spotters for the Iranian regime, identifying and cultivating potential recruits before transferring them to more experienced handlers in Tehran. While these specific allegations remain unproven, they align with concerns raised by multiple Western governments.

The broadcaster’s London operation has gained strategic importance for Iranian intelligence following international sanctions imposed by the European Union, Australia, Canada, and the United States. In 2023, the US Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control explicitly stated that Press TV had been “used by Iranian intelligence services to recruit sensitive assets, including US persons.”

Mr. Hackett highlighted the case of Monica Witt, a former US Air Force counter-intelligence specialist with top-secret clearance, describing her defection as “a bombshell on the intelligence community” and “the biggest win the Iranian regime ever had.” This case underscores the potential security threats posed by such recruitment efforts.

Press TV’s controversial flagship program “Palestine Declassified” has drawn particular criticism. The Community Security Trust (CST), a charity responsible for protecting Britain’s Jewish community, has labeled it “the most antisemitic media currently produced in this country.” The program is presented by Chris Williamson, a former Labour MP suspended over his dismissal of antisemitism concerns, and David Miller, an academic who won a discrimination case against Bristol University following his dismissal over anti-Zionist views.

Williamson, who was suspended from Labour in 2019, has previously stated that his expulsion from the party was due to “forces hostile to Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership” and told the BBC he didn’t want his statements to be misconstrued as “minimizing the cancer of anti-Semitism.”

The CST monitors each episode of “Palestine Declassified” closely. A spokesperson for the organization expressed serious concerns: “In every episode they pick a topic and highlight large numbers of ordinary Jewish organizations, charities, schools and individuals. They paint them all as genocidal, Zionist extremists who are infiltrating Britain.” The spokesperson added, “It is a clear example of the Iranian state inciting hatred of Jews and trying to cause division in British society, and we have been concerned for a long time about its harmful impact.”

Despite regulatory actions against Press TV – including losing its Ofcom broadcasting license in 2012 and being banned from YouTube – the outlet maintains a significant digital presence with over one million followers across major social media platforms including Instagram, Facebook and X (formerly Twitter).

A UK Government spokesperson responded to these concerns, stating: “We are clear-eyed about the threats posed by Iran, and our first priority is protecting British interests and British lives both in the UK and overseas. We have introduced a comprehensive set of additional measures aimed at countering threats posed by the Iranian regime.”

The situation highlights ongoing tensions between Western democracies and Iran, as well as the evolving nature of state-sponsored influence operations that blend traditional media, social platforms, and alleged intelligence activities. Press TV has been approached for comment on these allegations.
