Iran has unveiled what it claims to be a substantial underground drone facility, showcasing the development through state media propaganda footage meant to demonstrate the country’s growing military capabilities despite international sanctions.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) released video footage on Sunday showing rows of combat drones stored in what appears to be a vast subterranean complex. The location remains undisclosed for security reasons, according to Iranian officials, but the facility reportedly stretches hundreds of meters beneath the surface.

Brigadier General Abbas Nilforoushan, deputy commander of the IRGC, said during the facility tour that Iran now possesses “the region’s largest fleet of combat, reconnaissance and suicide drones.” The underground complex allegedly houses various drone models, including those capable of long-range reconnaissance and precision strikes.

This reveal comes amid heightened tensions in the Middle East, particularly following Iran’s direct attack on Israel in April, which included approximately 300 drones and missiles. Though most were intercepted, the attack demonstrated Iran’s willingness to deploy its drone arsenal in regional conflicts.

Defense analysts suggest the timing of this propaganda release is deliberate, coming as Iran faces increasing pressure over its nuclear program and military support for proxies throughout the region, including Hamas, Hezbollah, and Houthi rebels in Yemen.

“This is classic psychological warfare,” says Dr. Sanam Vakil, deputy director of the Middle East program at Chatham House. “Iran wants to project strength while under tremendous economic pressure from sanctions. The message is directed at both domestic and international audiences.”

The drone facility reveal highlights Iran’s strategic pivot toward asymmetric warfare capabilities. Unable to compete with Western powers or regional rivals like Israel and Saudi Arabia in conventional military technology, Iran has invested heavily in drone development as a cost-effective alternative.

Iran’s drone program has evolved significantly over the past decade. What began as simple reconnaissance vehicles has developed into a diverse arsenal that reportedly includes kamikaze drones, long-range strike platforms, and sophisticated surveillance models. The Shahed series, particularly the Shahed-136 loitering munition, has gained notoriety after being deployed by Russia in Ukraine.

Regional security experts note that Iran has effectively used its drone technology to project power through proxies across the Middle East. Houthi forces in Yemen have employed Iranian-designed drones to strike targets in Saudi Arabia and to threaten maritime shipping in the Red Sea. Similarly, Iranian-backed militias in Iraq and Syria have conducted drone strikes against U.S. military positions.

“What makes Iran’s drone strategy particularly effective is its distributed nature,” explains Michael Knights, a military analyst at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy. “They’ve created a network of production and operational capabilities that spans multiple countries, making it difficult to neutralize through conventional military means.”

The underground facility appears designed to protect Iran’s drone fleet from potential airstrikes. Israel has previously targeted Iranian military infrastructure, including suspected drone manufacturing sites. By housing key assets underground, Iran aims to ensure operational continuity even under attack.

International reaction to the footage has been measured. U.S. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller acknowledged awareness of the reports but declined detailed comment on intelligence matters. “We continue to monitor Iran’s military developments closely and remain committed to preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons capability,” Miller stated.

For regional neighbors, particularly Gulf states, the display represents a concerning development. Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have both been targets of drone attacks from Iran-backed groups and have invested heavily in air defense systems partly in response to this threat.

Military technology experts caution that while propaganda footage should be viewed skeptically, Iran has demonstrated genuine capabilities in drone warfare. The country has overcome significant technological hurdles despite international sanctions limiting access to advanced electronics and components.

As tensions persist across the Middle East, Iran’s drone arsenal represents a significant factor in the regional military balance. Whether used directly or through proxy forces, these relatively low-cost weapons provide Tehran with strategic leverage disproportionate to their technological sophistication.
