Diplomatic tensions flared this week after the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) refuted what it described as “misleading propaganda” from Bangladeshi media regarding a protest outside the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi.

According to MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, a small group of approximately 20-25 young people gathered outside the diplomatic mission on December 20 to protest the killing of Dipu Chandra Das in Bangladesh’s Mymensingh district. The demonstrators also called for greater protection of minorities in the neighboring country.

“No attempt was made to breach the fence or create a security situation at any time,” Jaiswal clarified, adding that police personnel stationed at the location quickly dispersed the group within minutes. “Visual evidence of these events is available publicly for all to see,” he noted, emphasizing India’s commitment to upholding the Vienna Convention regarding the safety of foreign diplomatic missions on its territory.

The incident occurs against a backdrop of escalating communal tensions in Bangladesh, where violence against religious minorities has drawn international concern. India has expressed particular alarm over attacks targeting Hindu communities.

Jaiswal confirmed that Indian officials remain in contact with Bangladesh authorities and have “conveyed our strong concerns over attacks on minorities.” The spokesperson specifically mentioned that India has urged Bangladesh to bring those responsible for the “barbaric killing” of Dipu Chandra Das to justice.

The diplomatic exchange comes during a period of heightened political instability in Bangladesh following the death of Sharif Osman Hadi, a prominent figure associated with Inquilab Mancha, a radical political platform that has gained significant influence in recent months. Hadi died in Singapore after sustaining gunshot wounds in an attack in central Dhaka earlier this month.

His death has triggered widespread protests across Dhaka, revealing deep divisions within Bangladesh’s political landscape during what was already a challenging transition period following the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government earlier this year. Analysts view the current situation as particularly volatile, with religious and nationalist sentiments increasingly influencing political discourse.

The deteriorating security situation for minorities in Bangladesh has become a recurring point of contention in India-Bangladesh relations. Human rights organizations have documented numerous incidents of violence against Hindu communities in Bangladesh, including attacks on temples, businesses, and homes.

India, with its significant Hindu majority population, has repeatedly raised concerns about the treatment of minorities in Bangladesh through diplomatic channels. The current interim government in Bangladesh, led by Muhammad Yunus, has promised to protect all citizens regardless of religious affiliation, but implementation of these assurances remains inconsistent, according to rights observers.

Regional security experts note that instability in Bangladesh could have broader implications for South Asia, potentially affecting migration patterns, trade relationships, and security cooperation. India shares a 4,096-kilometer border with Bangladesh and maintains significant economic ties with its eastern neighbor.

The MEA spokesperson confirmed that India continues to closely monitor developments in Bangladesh, suggesting ongoing diplomatic engagement during this sensitive period. Observers believe that maintaining constructive diplomatic communication will be essential as both countries navigate this challenging phase in their relationship.

As tensions persist, civil society organizations in both countries have called for calm and protection of vulnerable communities, emphasizing the importance of historical ties between the two South Asian neighbors despite periodic political disagreements.
