In a major shift that has captured industry attention, CBS News is reportedly undergoing a significant transformation in its editorial approach, moving away from what some characterize as a “liberal opinion posture” toward what observers describe as a more center-right position.

At the center of this transition stands Bari Weiss, a former New York Times opinion writer who departed the newspaper amid controversy over what she described as ideological limitations within its editorial department. Weiss’s appointment signals CBS’s intention to recalibrate its journalistic positioning in an increasingly polarized media landscape.

He notes that his letter omitted even more challenging information about Lincoln—that the president’s emancipation efforts were partly motivated by military recruitment needs and a deportation agenda for freed slaves, details that might further complicate Lincoln’s legacy in progressive circles.

However, Shinkoskey is equally critical of conservative media’s approach to history and policy. He argues that “both varieties of ‘wokism’ are equally lost” in their understanding of American constitutional history and democratic principles. He points to MAGA conservatives who “consign the Constitution to the dustbin in their disregard for the powers of Congress” by advocating for expanded presidential authority.

The media landscape’s polarization extends to religious and economic coverage as well. Shinkoskey critiques evangelical conservatives who believe “that the policies of the religious kingdom of God should reign supreme over those of the secular agencies of government,” and fiscal conservatives who advocate for minimal corporate regulation and regressive taxation—positions he characterizes as “historically very un-American ideas.”

Media industry analysts note that CBS’s repositioning comes at a time of intense competition for viewership and credibility. Traditional broadcast networks face pressure not only from cable news counterparts but also from digital platforms that have fragmented the audience and created distinct information ecosystems.
