Russian Disinformation Campaign Allegedly Targets Hungarian Prime Minister Orbán

The Hungarian government has strongly refuted claims published in The Washington Post that Russian intelligence services contemplated staging an assassination attempt against Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. Government officials dismissed the report as “completely false” and “pro-Ukrainian propaganda” in a statement to Hungarian news outlet Telex.

The controversy erupted after The Washington Post published an article citing Western intelligence sources and an internal report allegedly showing that Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) had discussed orchestrating an assassination attempt on Orbán. According to the report, Russian intelligence officials expressed concern about Orbán’s declining popularity and considered “radical measures” to keep the Hungarian leader in power.

Hungary’s government information center, operating within the Prime Minister’s Office, countered these allegations by claiming that “it is a fact that the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy publicly threatened the Prime Minister of Hungary with death during the election campaign,” though provided no evidence for this serious accusation.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó further dismissed the reports, characterizing them as unnecessary agitation by “the Ukrainian propaganda press and its Hungarian partners.” Szijjártó, who has maintained close diplomatic ties with Moscow despite EU sanctions against Russia following its invasion of Ukraine, found himself at the center of additional allegations in the same Washington Post report.

The American newspaper claimed that Szijjártó regularly consulted with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov during breaks in EU meetings, effectively providing Moscow with real-time intelligence about confidential European Union deliberations. This arrangement, if true, would represent a significant breach of EU security protocols and trust among member states.

Péter Magyar, leader of Hungary’s opposition Tisza party, seized on these allegations, stating: “The fact that the Hungarian foreign minister, a good friend of Sergei Lavrov, informs the Russians almost every minute about every EU meeting is a clear betrayal. This man has betrayed not only his country, but also Europe.”

Magyar further commented that the alleged assassination plot “did not surprise him,” suggesting his party had anticipated such tactics even before recent elections.

The controversy comes at a particularly sensitive time in Hungary’s relations with both the EU and Ukraine. Orbán has consistently obstructed EU efforts to support Ukraine, most recently blocking a €90 billion reparations loan approved by other European Union members. This stance has earned him support from Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, who has similarly maintained more Russia-friendly positions than most EU leaders.

Hungary’s government under Orbán has increasingly diverged from mainstream European positions, particularly regarding Russia. While most EU members have strongly condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and implemented sanctions, Orbán has maintained closer ties with Moscow and repeatedly obstructed unified EU action against Russia.

The allegations regarding Szijjártó’s communications with Lavrov during EU meetings are especially troubling for European security coordination. If accurate, they would indicate that Hungary has been functioning as a conduit for sensitive EU information to flow directly to Russian officials, potentially undermining European strategic interests and unity.

As tensions continue between Hungary and its EU partners over Ukraine policy, these latest allegations add another layer of complexity to already strained relationships within the European bloc, highlighting the challenges of maintaining cohesion in the face of Russia’s ongoing aggression in Ukraine.
