Cyberattack Disrupts Canadian Airport with Pro-Hamas Messages
A sophisticated cyberattack targeted Kelowna International Airport in British Columbia on Tuesday evening, disrupting normal operations and forcing staff to resort to emergency communication measures. Hackers breached the airport’s digital infrastructure, displaying politically charged messages on terminal information screens and hijacking the public address system.
According to airport CEO Sam Samaddar, the breach affected two flights—delaying one departure by four hours and an arrival by two hours. The compromised screens displayed pro-Hamas propaganda, including the message “Israel lost the war, Hamas won,” while also targeting U.S. President Donald Trump with derogatory language.
“We have a cybersecurity response plan, and we activated that yesterday evening,” Samaddar explained. “We were able to decouple, disconnect those messages very, very quickly and then lead through an investigation in terms of what had happened.”
Images circulating on social media showed airport personnel using handheld megaphones to communicate vital information to passengers after the public address system was compromised. The attack represents a concerning escalation in cybersecurity threats against critical transportation infrastructure.
Multiple agencies have launched investigations into the incident. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) is leading a criminal investigation, while the Canadian Centre for Cybersecurity in Ottawa and Transport Canada are conducting separate inquiries to determine how the breach occurred and prevent future attacks.
A hacker known as “Siberislam” has been identified as potentially responsible for the attack, raising questions about international dimensions to the security breach. The incident highlights vulnerabilities in digital systems at transportation hubs that are essential to public safety and national security.
Jewish advocacy organizations expressed alarm over the incident. The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA) characterized the cyberattack as “a reminder that pro-Hamas supporters pose a serious threat to all Canadians.”
“While the U.S.-led peace plan is bringing the war in the Middle East to an end, the war against Canadian communities and values is intensifying,” CIJA stated. “Disrupting travel and sowing fear undermines public safety. Acts of intimidation have no place in our country.”
B’nai Brith Canada called the incident “deeply disturbing” and urged Transportation Minister Omar Alghabra to launch a thorough investigation into how “a foreign actor was able to gain control of the infrastructure at a Canadian airport and broadcast messages glorifying a listed terror entity.”
The organization further characterized the breach as “yet another alarming example of the evolving threats to our national security posed by extremist supporters of terror.”
The attack comes amid increasing global concerns about cybersecurity vulnerabilities in critical infrastructure. Airports are particularly attractive targets for both politically motivated actors and criminal organizations due to their high visibility and potential for disruption.
Cybersecurity experts have long warned that public-facing systems like information displays and announcement systems can present security challenges, as they must balance accessibility with protection from unauthorized access.
Kelowna International Airport serves as a regional transportation hub for British Columbia’s Interior region, handling approximately 2 million passengers annually. As a Transport Canada-owned facility, the breach raises significant questions about federal security protocols and the adequacy of current cybersecurity measures at transportation facilities nationwide.
The incident demonstrates how geopolitical conflicts can extend into cyberspace, affecting civilian infrastructure thousands of miles from conflict zones. As authorities continue their investigation, the airport has implemented additional security measures to prevent further disruptions to its operations.

This is a concerning cyberattack that exploited the airport’s digital infrastructure to spread politically charged messages. Disruptions to critical aviation infrastructure are troubling and can have serious impacts on travelers and operations.
Airports need to be vigilant against such cyberattacks and have robust security measures in place to prevent unauthorized access and mitigate the fallout from any breaches.
Cyberattacks on critical infrastructure like airports can have far-reaching consequences. I’m glad the airport was able to mitigate the disruptions, but this incident highlights the need for continued investment in robust cybersecurity measures across the industry.
Airports are critical transportation hubs that must be protected from malicious cyber actors. This incident shows the need for continuous security upgrades and robust incident response plans to mitigate the impact of such attacks.
Targeting an airport with pro-Hamas messages is a concerning escalation of cyber-enabled propaganda. I hope the investigation can shed light on the perpetrators and their motives, and that lessons learned can help strengthen defenses for similar attacks.
Airport security and cybersecurity must go hand-in-hand to protect passengers and operations. This event underscores the importance of ongoing vigilance and preparedness against evolving digital threats.
It’s alarming to see how hackers can target vital transportation hubs like this airport to spread propaganda. I hope the authorities can quickly identify the perpetrators and strengthen cybersecurity protocols to prevent future incidents.
Passengers’ safety and security should always be the top priority. The airport’s quick response to decouple the compromised systems is commendable, but more needs to be done to fortify digital defenses.
