Former Romanian Presidential Candidate Faces Trial for Promoting Fascist Ideologies

A criminal case against former Romanian presidential candidate Călin Georgescu has advanced to public hearings after clearing the preliminary chamber stage at the Bucharest Court. Georgescu stands accused of promoting fascist, far-right, racist, and xenophobic propaganda, allegations that have shaken Romania’s political landscape.

The case represents just one of two criminal proceedings against Georgescu. The second case, which involves allegations of an attempted coup d’état, remains in the preliminary procedure phase, where authorities are verifying the legality of evidence collection and submission.

Georgescu captured national attention after unexpectedly finishing first in the initial round of Romania’s presidential election in November 2024. His rapid rise to prominence came through what authorities describe as a sophisticated social media campaign. According to Romania’s Supreme Council of National Defence (CSAT), this campaign was powered by bot networks that had been methodically prepared years in advance by entities with links to Russia.

The election results prompted significant controversy, ultimately leading Romania’s Constitutional Court to order a complete rerun of the electoral process. In an unprecedented move, Georgescu was barred from participating in the second attempt, with officials citing his radical rhetoric as justification for the exclusion.

The prosecution’s case against Georgescu is substantial. He is charged with “publicly promoting the cult of persons guilty of crimes of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes, as well as for publicly promoting fascist, legionary, racist or xenophobic ideas, concepts or doctrines, in a continuous form.” The indictment specifically references five separate incidents between June 16, 2020, and May 16, 2025.

Prosecutors allege that Georgescu made public calls for national “regeneration and rebirth” through a process called palingenesis – essentially advocating for the creation of a “new man” within an Orthodox Christian mystical framework. This ideology, according to the indictment, implicitly accepted the use of violence and advocated for the emergence of a charismatic, predestined, and authoritarian leader.

Perhaps most damning are accusations that Georgescu glorified Marshal Ion Antonescu, who was convicted of war crimes for his role in Romania’s alliance with Nazi Germany during World War II. Investigators claim Georgescu praised Antonescu as a national hero and meticulously imitated his speech patterns, gestures, and tone of voice.

The indictment further states that Georgescu gave the legionary salute – associated with Romania’s interwar fascist Iron Guard movement – during a speech at an anti-COVID restriction rally in Bucharest’s University Square on October 2, 2021.

Georgescu’s case highlights Romania’s ongoing struggle with extremist ideologies and Russian influence in its political system. The country, which joined the European Union in 2007 and has been a NATO member since 2004, has worked to strengthen democratic institutions after decades of communist rule that ended in 1989.

Political analysts note that Georgescu’s rise reflects broader European trends of nationalist and populist movements gaining traction. His campaign exploited social divisions, economic anxieties, and anti-establishment sentiment prevalent in Romanian society.

The judicial proceedings against Georgescu are being closely watched by international observers, including the European Commission, which has previously raised concerns about rule of law issues in Romania. How the Romanian judicial system handles these cases will likely impact the country’s standing within European institutions.

As the trial moves forward, Romanian authorities face the challenge of balancing free speech protections with laws prohibiting the promotion of fascist ideologies – a particularly sensitive issue in a region with painful memories of 20th-century totalitarianism.
