Former Romanian Presidential Candidate Faces Trial for Promoting Fascist Ideology

One of two criminal cases against former Romanian presidential candidate Călin Georgescu is advancing to public hearings after clearing the preliminary chamber stage at the Bucharest Court. The case centers on allegations of fascist, far-right, racist, and xenophobic propaganda, marking a significant development in Romania’s legal proceedings against the controversial political figure.

Meanwhile, a second and potentially more serious case against Georgescu, which involves accusations of attempting a coup d’état, remains in the preliminary procedure. This phase is designed to verify whether prosecutors gathered and submitted evidence in accordance with Romanian law before proceeding to trial.

Georgescu rose to national prominence during the November 2024 presidential election when he unexpectedly placed first in the initial round of voting. His sudden political ascent came after what experts describe as a calculated social media campaign that caught traditional political forces off guard. According to Romania’s Supreme Council of National Defence (CSAT), his campaign benefited from sophisticated bot networks that had been meticulously prepared years in advance by entities with connections to Russia.

The election’s aftermath proved tumultuous when Romania’s Constitutional Court (CCR) took the extraordinary step of ordering a complete rerun of the electoral process. During this unprecedented political crisis, Georgescu was barred from participating in the second electoral cycle, with authorities citing his radical rhetoric as grounds for disqualification.

In the case that has now been cleared for trial, prosecutors have charged Georgescu with “publicly promoting the cult of persons guilty of crimes of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes, as well as for publicly promoting fascist, legionary, racist or xenophobic ideas, concepts or doctrines, in a continuous form.” The indictment specifically references five separate incidents between June 2020 and May 2025.

The prosecutors’ case details how Georgescu allegedly advocated for national “regeneration and rebirth” through a concept known as palingenesis – the creation of a “new man” within an Orthodox Christian mystical framework. This ideology, according to the indictment, implicitly accepted the potential use of violence and called for the emergence of a charismatic, predestined, and authoritarian leader.

Perhaps most controversially, Georgescu stands accused of glorifying Marshal Ion Antonescu, Romania’s wartime leader who was convicted of war crimes for his role in the Holocaust. The indictment claims Georgescu not only praised Antonescu as a national hero but meticulously imitated his speech patterns, gestures, and tone of voice during public appearances.

In one specific incident highlighted by prosecutors, Georgescu allegedly gave the legionary salute – associated with Romania’s fascist Iron Guard movement of the 1930s and 1940s – during an anti-COVID restriction protest in Bucharest’s University Square on October 2, 2021.

The case represents a significant test of Romania’s legal framework for addressing extremist political rhetoric and historical revisionism. The country, which experienced both fascist rule and four decades of communist dictatorship during the 20th century, has struggled with historical memory and political extremism in the post-communist era.

Political analysts note that Georgescu’s case exemplifies a broader European trend of far-right figures utilizing modern communication platforms to revive interwar fascist ideologies while adapting them to contemporary grievances. The outcome of this trial could establish important precedents for how Romania’s judicial system addresses political extremism in the digital age.

The trial is expected to draw significant public attention as it unfolds in the coming months, with implications for Romania’s political landscape and its ongoing efforts to address historical trauma and extremist ideologies.
