U.S. servicemember rescue in Iran contradicts disinformation spread on social media

False information surrounding the recent rescue of a U.S. Air Force pilot downed over Iranian territory circulated on social media last weekend, including claims amplified by a former high-ranking intelligence official.

Joe Kent, who previously served as director of the National Counterterrorism Center, shared misleading information on social media claiming the United States was attempting to kill, rather than rescue, its own servicemember whose fighter jet was shot down over Iran.

The disinformation originated from Tasnim News, a media outlet with direct ties to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), and was subsequently republished by Drop Site News, a far-left outlet known for its sympathetic coverage of Hamas and authoritarian regimes. The Iranian state-linked report falsely asserted that U.S. forces had “lost hope” of recovering the downed airman and were instead “attempting to kill him.”

Kent amplified the unverified claim while adding his own commentary: “Praying for the rescue of our downed pilot & the safe return of our Special Operators going in to get him back. [U.S. Air Force Pararescuemen and Combat Search and Rescue] Air crews are top notch.”

The Iranian narrative was thoroughly debunked Sunday when President Donald Trump announced the successful rescue of the crew member following what he described as a “daring” operation by U.S. special forces. This development directly contradicted the false claim that American forces were targeting their own servicemember.

In his statement on Truth Social, Trump revealed that the pilot’s location had been continuously monitored “24 hours a day” while U.S. military planners were “diligently planning for his rescue.” The successful extraction operation demonstrated the U.S. military’s continued capabilities in personnel recovery behind enemy lines.

This incident highlights the ongoing information warfare tactics employed by adversarial nations like Iran, which regularly use state-controlled media to spread disinformation designed to undermine U.S. military operations and sow discord. It also demonstrates how quickly false information can spread when amplified by individuals with backgrounds in national security, potentially lending credibility to inaccurate narratives.

The spread of this particular piece of disinformation is especially notable given Kent’s previous position within the U.S. intelligence community. Kent resigned from his role as director of the National Counterterrorism Center in March, citing his opposition to U.S. military operations against Iran. Upon his resignation, Kent claimed that Iran posed “no imminent threat to our nation” and accused the United States of initiating military action “due to pressure from Israel and its powerful American lobby.”

Military analysts note that combat search and rescue operations represent some of the most dangerous missions undertaken by U.S. special operations forces, requiring precise coordination, intelligence gathering, and split-second decision making. The successful recovery of the downed pilot demonstrates the effectiveness of these specialized units.

The incident also underscores the challenges facing media consumers in distinguishing between legitimate news sources and outlets serving as propaganda vehicles for foreign governments. Tasnim News, which originated the false claim, functions as a mouthpiece for Iran’s IRGC, a designated terrorist organization by the United States.

As tensions between the United States and Iran continue to simmer across the Middle East, disinformation campaigns are expected to intensify, targeting Western audiences through social media and sympathetic news outlets. Security experts recommend maintaining heightened skepticism toward unverified claims about military operations, particularly those originating from state-controlled media in adversarial nations.
