Federal agents have indicted a 20-year-old Sarasota man on multiple charges following the discovery of what authorities describe as preparations for a racially motivated attack, alongside illegal firearms and child sexual abuse material.
Lucas Alexander Temple faces federal charges including possessing an unregistered firearm, possessing a firearm with a removed serial number, and receiving child sexual abuse material, according to an announcement Monday from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Florida.
Federal agents executed a search warrant at Temple’s Sarasota residence on November 20, where they recovered a shotgun with a sawed-off barrel that was not registered to him. Under federal law, shotguns with barrels shorter than 18 inches must be registered in the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record.
The investigation uncovered far more disturbing evidence beyond the illegal firearm. U.S. Attorney Gregory Kehoe revealed that agents discovered what appeared to be preparations for a racially motivated act of violence, including multiple firearms, ammunition, pipe bombs, and a pressure cooker. Literature detailing how to manufacture explosives and a written plan outlining violent intentions were also found at the residence.
“The materials recovered suggest an individual deeply immersed in extremist ideology with concrete plans for violence,” said a law enforcement official familiar with the case who requested anonymity as they weren’t authorized to speak publicly.
Among the concerning items, investigators found Nazi and mass shooting propaganda, including journals of the 1999 Columbine High School shooters Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris. Temple also possessed a large flag bearing the symbol of Atomwaffen Division, a neo-Nazi organization classified by federal authorities as a racially or ethnically motivated violent extremist group.
The Atomwaffen Division has targeted racial minorities, Jewish communities, LGBTQ+ individuals, government institutions, journalists, and critical infrastructure. The group’s ideology centers on “accelerationism,” which aims to push society into armed conflict to create radical social transformation. The presence of their materials raises concerns about the growing spread of extremist ideologies among young Americans.
Digital evidence revealed that Temple allegedly communicated online with other ideologically aligned individuals about conducting violence against minorities. Investigators say he provided instructions on manufacturing explosives to these contacts, suggesting his involvement extended beyond personal preparations to potentially aiding others with similar violent intentions.
During their search, agents also discovered evidence that Temple had received images of a minor engaged in sexually explicit conduct on at least two occasions, leading to the additional charges.
The case represents a coordinated effort between federal and local law enforcement, with the FBI leading the investigation with assistance from the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office and the Sarasota Police Department.
Federal officials indicated the prosecution is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide Department of Justice initiative that aims to protect communities from violent crime by coordinating resources across multiple federal programs. This operation represents an intensified focus on identifying potential domestic terror threats before they materialize into attacks.
Temple had previously been arrested on a criminal complaint prior to the formal indictment. If convicted on all counts, he faces up to 20 years in federal prison.
The case comes amid heightened concerns about domestic extremism and racially motivated violence across the United States. According to recent FBI assessments, racially or ethnically motivated violent extremists represent one of the most lethal domestic terrorism threats in the country.
Temple’s case remains under investigation as authorities work to determine if he had accomplices or connections to broader extremist networks. The court has not yet announced a trial date, and it remains unclear whether Temple has secured legal representation.
