In a fiery rebuke of his political opponents, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann challenged BJP leaders on Saturday to provide concrete evidence supporting their claims about a purported “Sheesh Mahal,” dismissing the allegations as baseless propaganda designed to mislead the public.

The controversy centers around accusations from BJP leaders regarding Mann’s official residences in Chandigarh. In a video message addressing the claims, Mann clarified that since taking office, he has maintained house number 45 as his official residence, while house number 50 serves as his guest house and camp office where he hosts important meetings and accommodates visiting dignitaries.

“These are not ‘Sheesh Mahals’ but ordinary government residences used by leaders elected by the people of Punjab,” Mann stated, emphasizing that neither property has been allocated for personal use outside official functions.

The Chief Minister suggested the BJP’s attacks stem from political desperation, particularly as the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) continues to expand its support base across India, notably in Gujarat—a traditional BJP stronghold. According to Mann, lacking substantial policy criticisms, the opposition has resorted to “dirty tantrums” including “morphed videos and frivolous claims” to tarnish his government’s reputation.

In a pointed counterattack, Mann accused the BJP of hypocrisy, alleging that its own allies have constructed “huge palaces” using illegally acquired funds. He specifically mentioned former Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh, who joined the BJP after being ousted from the Congress party, and long-time BJP associate Sukhbir Singh Badal of the Shiromani Akali Dal.

“Those who have palaces, and are now in BJP fold, never stayed back in these houses rather their staff and friends used to occupy them,” Mann claimed, suggesting a double standard in the BJP’s criticism.

The Punjab Chief Minister also made a startling allegation against BJP Minister of State Ravneet Singh Bittu, claiming he is “illegally squatting” in a government residence in Chandigarh that was originally allocated to his uncle, Tej Parkash Singh. According to Mann, despite multiple notices, the Punjab Governor has failed to take action to vacate the property.

Mann also made a veiled reference to Captain Amarinder Singh’s personal life, daring the BJP to question whether Pakistani journalist Aroosa Alam, who was reportedly close to the former Chief Minister, had lived in the same official residence during Singh’s tenure.

The heated exchange highlights the increasingly contentious political environment in Punjab, where the AAP government, in power since March 2022, faces consistent opposition from the BJP and other parties. This conflict occurs against the backdrop of Punjab’s ongoing economic challenges, agricultural issues, and border security concerns.

Political analysts note that such rhetoric has intensified as parties begin positioning themselves for future electoral contests. The AAP government in Punjab represents one of the party’s most significant political achievements outside Delhi, making it a prime target for opposition attacks.

The controversy also underscores the continuing debate about the appropriate use of government resources by elected officials, a sensitive issue in a state where many citizens face economic hardship. As the political blame game continues, Punjab residents are left watching their leaders engage in increasingly personal attacks while waiting for solutions to the state’s pressing problems.

  1. I appreciate the CM’s direct response to these allegations. Dismissing them as ‘propaganda’ is a strong stance, but he appears to have the facts on his side. It will be interesting to see if the BJP can back up their claims with concrete evidence.

  2. William N. Moore on

The BJP’s accusations seem politically motivated, as the CM suggests. It’s concerning when political opponents make unsubstantiated claims to try to discredit their rivals. Fact-checking and open dialogue are crucial in a healthy democracy.

Interesting controversy around the CM’s residences. It’s good to see the government address these allegations head-on and provide clarity to the public. Transparency is important, especially for public officials.

  4. The expanding support for AAP across India, even in traditional BJP strongholds, is an intriguing political development. It will be worth monitoring how this plays out, especially as the BJP seems to be resorting to unsubstantiated attacks.
