Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has issued a clear directive to Shiv Sena parliamentarians, urging them to aggressively counter what he describes as “propaganda” being spread by opposition parties in both houses of Parliament.

The instructions came during a crucial meeting held at Shinde’s official residence in Mumbai on Friday. All Shiv Sena MPs from both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha attended the gathering, which focused on developing a coordinated strategy to address opposition claims and strengthen the party’s position in national politics.

“Our MPs must be vocal and proactive in Parliament. We need to counter the false narratives being spread by opposition parties with facts and truth,” Shinde told the assembled legislators. He emphasized the importance of highlighting the government’s achievements and development initiatives in Maharashtra rather than allowing opposition criticism to go unchallenged.

The meeting comes at a critical juncture for Maharashtra’s political landscape, as the state approaches assembly elections expected later this year. The Shinde-led Shiv Sena, which split from the original party founded by Bal Thackeray following internal disagreements with former Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, is working to solidify its political identity and electoral prospects.

Political analysts note that this directive reflects the ongoing struggle for legitimacy between the two Sena factions. The Shinde group, which received recognition from the Election Commission as the official Shiv Sena in February 2023, continues to face challenges from the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT).

“This is essentially about narrative control,” explained Dr. Sandeep Shastri, a prominent political commentator. “Shinde needs his parliamentarians to be the voice of the ‘real’ Shiv Sena in the national forum. By actively countering opposition claims, they’re not just defending government policies but also reinforcing their claim to Bal Thackeray’s legacy.”

During the meeting, Shinde also briefed the MPs on various infrastructure and development projects being implemented across Maharashtra. He specifically highlighted the progress on the Mumbai Coastal Road, Samruddhi Expressway, and metro rail networks in major cities, presenting these as evidence of his government’s commitment to development.

Sources familiar with the discussions revealed that Shinde particularly emphasized countering narratives around agricultural issues, inflation, and unemployment – topics the opposition has frequently used to criticize both the state government and the BJP-led central government.

The Maharashtra political landscape has grown increasingly complex since June 2022, when Shinde, along with a majority of Shiv Sena MLAs, broke away from Uddhav Thackeray’s leadership. This rebellion led to the collapse of the Maha Vikas Aghadi government, a coalition of Shiv Sena, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), and Congress. Shinde subsequently formed a government with BJP support.

The factional divide deepened further when NCP also split in July 2023, with Ajit Pawar leading a breakaway group to join the Shinde government, leaving his uncle Sharad Pawar to lead the remaining faction.

Industry observers note that political stability is crucial for Maharashtra, which accounts for nearly 15% of India’s GDP and hosts the country’s financial capital, Mumbai. The state’s economic performance has significant implications for national economic indicators.

“Maharashtra’s political dynamics directly impact investor confidence and policy implementation,” said economist Arun Kumar. “The messaging from ruling coalition parliamentarians in national forums carries weight not just politically but also economically.”

As the parliamentary session continues, Shinde’s MPs are expected to take a more active role in debates, especially on issues concerning Maharashtra’s development, central government schemes, and financial allocations to the state.

The chief minister has also reportedly established a coordination committee to ensure that Shiv Sena parliamentarians have access to accurate data and talking points to effectively counter opposition claims in both houses of Parliament.
