An 18-year-old man from Weston, Canberra, was arrested on Christmas Eve after allegedly performing Nazi salutes in public and distributing propaganda materials at the Australian National University (ANU), according to the Australian Federal Police (AFP).

The teenager faces multiple serious charges following incidents at Canberra shopping centers and unauthorized visits to the university campus. Authorities allege he performed Nazi salutes on two separate occasions in recent months when confronted by members of the public.

AFP Assistant Commissioner Stephen Nutt emphasized the severity of the alleged offenses, stating, “Anyone allegedly performing Nazi salutes is displaying criminal behavior that brings pain and anguish to the Jewish community and divides Australian society.” Nutt described antisemitism as “a cancer that requires swift and direct action,” highlighting the AFP’s commitment to combating hate-motivated activities.

The incidents reportedly escalated in October when a shopper confronted the teenager while he was placing stickers at a shopping center. According to police, the man responded by performing a Nazi salute before leaving the premises. A similar incident allegedly occurred on December 12 at another shopping location.

Beyond the public displays, investigators claim the suspect trespassed multiple times at ANU during August and September, where he allegedly placed propaganda-style stickers on university buildings and property. These actions form part of the broader case against him.

Following these incidents, AFP officers executed a search warrant on Christmas Eve, seizing potential evidence including mobile phones, a computer, storage devices, a video camera, clothing, and propaganda stickers. The comprehensive nature of the search reflects the seriousness with which authorities are treating the case.

The charges against the teenager are substantial. He faces two counts of public display of prohibited Nazi symbols or giving Nazi salute, which carries a maximum penalty of five years imprisonment under recently strengthened laws targeting hate symbols. Additionally, he has been charged with two counts of offensive or disorderly behavior on Commonwealth premises and two counts of damaging Commonwealth property – the latter carrying a potential 10-year prison sentence.

The case comes amid growing concerns about extremism and hate speech in Australia. In response to these trends, the AFP established a National Security Investigations team in September specifically designed to “target groups and individuals causing high harm to Australia’s social cohesion,” including those attempting to vilify marginalized communities.

This specialized unit reflects a broader national effort to address extremism and hate-motivated activity before it escalates to violence. The investigation demonstrates authorities’ increasing willingness to use criminal charges to combat public expressions of extremist ideology, particularly those associated with Nazi symbolism.

Australia has been strengthening its legal framework against hate speech and extremism in recent years, with several states enacting specific legislation banning Nazi symbols and salutes. The ACT, where Canberra is located, passed laws prohibiting such displays in 2023 following similar legislation in other jurisdictions.

The timing of the arrest during the holiday season underscores the AFP’s commitment to addressing such activities regardless of timing or circumstances.

The accused is expected to appear before the ACT Magistrate’s Court on Friday, where he will face the multiple charges that could potentially result in significant prison time if convicted.
