BJP MP Anurag Thakur launched a scathing attack on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday, accusing him of being a “Leader of Propaganda” rather than serving effectively as Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha.

Speaking to reporters outside Parliament, Thakur’s criticism came in response to Gandhi’s recent controversial statement alleging that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is “100 percent under the control” of US President Donald Trump.

“They demean the country. He has now become Leader of Propaganda or Leader of Opposing Bharat,” Thakur said, using the Sanskrit name for India that has gained prominence under the Modi administration.

The BJP representative from Himachal Pradesh further criticized the Congress party’s approach to the ongoing conflict in West Asia, questioning their commitment to national security discussions. He pointed to their absence during Prime Minister Modi’s address to Parliament on the situation.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a very serious statement in the Lok Sabha regarding the current situation. Everyone expected that the Opposition leaders would also be serious about such a critical issue, but there was no seriousness on their part. They were absent from the House,” Thakur remarked.

The former Union Minister suggested this pattern of behavior reflects a deeper issue with the Congress party’s priorities. “If they were serious, they would have been present during the statement. Only tweeting and giving statements from outside shows that the Congress, which was in power for 60 years, can only criticize.”

Thakur escalated his criticism by drawing connections between Congress’s stance on various national security operations and what he perceives as their ideological alignment. “During surgical strikes on Pakistan, Operation Sindoor, and even when delegations of all party leaders were sent by Prime Minister Modi to various countries across the world, we saw what the Congress was saying. This clearly shows their mindset. They believe in Pakistan’s ideology not India’s.”

The political confrontation comes amid heightened tensions in West Asia, where India has been working diplomatically to protect its interests and ensure the safety of Indian nationals in the region.

In a separate but equally pointed criticism, Thakur addressed domestic issues in his home state of Himachal Pradesh, where the Congress-led government recently passed legislation imposing additional cess on petrol and diesel.

“I appeal that this Rs 5 cess on petrol and diesel should be rolled back so that the people of Himachal are not burdened,” he said, characterizing the move as part of what he called a deceptive “‘khatakhat’ model” that Congress promised during state elections.

Thakur detailed the financial impact of Congress policies in the state: “When the Congress government came to power, VAT was increased by Rs 10.40 in total on diesel, and now they have implemented Rs 5 cess. Himachal’s residents have to face this burden of increased VAT and tax.”

The MP painted a concerning picture of Himachal Pradesh’s financial health under Congress leadership, claiming the state now faces unprecedented debt levels. “A small state like Himachal Pradesh is under a debt of more than Rs 1 lakh 4 thousand crore. The state Congress government has taken around Rs 46 thousand crore as debt in the last three years.”

These exchanges highlight the increasingly confrontational nature of Indian political discourse, particularly between the ruling BJP and opposition Congress, as both parties position themselves for future electoral contests while managing current governance challenges at national and state levels.

Interesting political rhetoric from the BJP MP. While I appreciate the need for robust political debate, it’s important to avoid inflammatory language and focus on substantive policy issues that impact the country. Perhaps the opposition could provide a more constructive counterargument.

  2. The BJP MP’s comments highlight the polarized nature of Indian politics. While I understand the desire to defend one’s party, resorting to labels like ‘leader of propaganda’ seems counterproductive. I’d prefer to see substantive policy debates that put the country’s interests first.

The ‘leader of propaganda’ label seems quite inflammatory. While I understand the BJP’s desire to defend its record, the opposition also plays an important role in holding the government accountable. Hopefully, the discourse can become more constructive and less confrontational.

As an observer, I find the political infighting concerning. India faces many complex economic and social issues that require bipartisan solutions. Perhaps the opposition and ruling party could find more common ground to address pressing national priorities.

This exchange highlights the growing political polarization in India. While I respect the need for rigorous debate, the use of loaded terms like ‘leader of propaganda’ is concerning. Perhaps the parties could find ways to engage more civilly and focus on substantive policy issues.

This seems like more of the typical partisan sparring we see in Indian politics. I’d be curious to hear Rahul Gandhi’s response and whether he can articulate a clear vision for the opposition that goes beyond merely criticizing the ruling party.

    • Absolutely, getting both sides of the story is important for forming a balanced view. Hopefully the political discourse can move beyond personal attacks and focus more on addressing the real challenges facing India.

Rahul Gandhi’s alleged statements about PM Modi being ‘under the control’ of President Trump are certainly controversial. However, the BJP MP’s retort also seems overly partisan. Robust political debate is healthy, but it should focus on facts and policies, not personal attacks.
