Arezzo Teen Under Investigation for Hate Propaganda as DIGOS Conducts Search

Italian authorities conducted a raid on April 4 targeting a 15-year-old boy in the Arezzo area as part of an investigation into online extremism and hate speech. The operation, carried out by DIGOS units from both Florence and Arezzo Police Headquarters, was authorized through a search warrant issued by Dr. Filippo Focardi, Deputy Public Prosecutor of the Florence Juvenile Court.

The teen faces serious allegations of propaganda and incitement to crime based on racial, ethnic, and religious discrimination conducted through digital platforms. Officials classified these actions under Italy’s hate speech laws, which carry enhanced penalties when committed using electronic means.

The investigation originated from routine online monitoring conducted by the State Police’s specialized Anti-Terrorism Unit in collaboration with Internal Intelligence. Investigators identified a social media profile operating in digital spaces associated with right-wing extremism and white supremacist ideologies. The account had posted content promoting violence and expressing support for a recent incident where an underage student committed a crime against a teacher.

Authorities rapidly traced the account to the teenager residing in the Arezzo province. The case highlights the growing concern among European law enforcement about radicalization of minors through online platforms, particularly those promoting extremist ideologies.

During the execution of the search warrant, investigators discovered disturbing material that painted a troubling psychological profile. Of particular concern was a video recovered from the minor’s cell phone depicting him wielding a large kitchen knife and repeatedly stabbing a sofa cushion in what appeared to be a simulation of violence. Investigators noted the content revealed “a marked sense of contempt for women,” suggesting possible misogynistic motivations alongside the racial and religious hatred elements.

The search resulted in the seizure of the teenager’s cell phone and PlayStation console, which will undergo comprehensive forensic analysis by counterterrorism specialists. These examinations typically focus on communication records, search histories, and potential connections to extremist networks or coordination with other individuals.

Authorities also confiscated paper materials containing handwritten notes referencing individuals responsible for high-profile murders and terrorist attacks. This discovery has raised concerns about possible inspiration from past violent extremists, a pattern often observed in cases of radicalization.
