The White House and conservatives have sharply criticized New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill following her announcement of a new portal designed to monitor U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations within the state.

Sherrill, who took office just weeks ago after serving as a U.S. Navy veteran, recently appeared on The Daily Show where she encouraged New Jersey residents to document ICE activities. “We want documentation, and we are going to make sure we get it,” Sherrill stated. “We are going to be standing up a portal so people can upload all their cell videos and alert people. If you see an ICE agent in the street, get your phone out, we want to know.”

The Biden administration quickly condemned Sherrill’s initiative. White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson told Fox News Digital, “If Sherrill was as committed to tracking down criminal illegal aliens as she was ICE officers, New Jersey residents would be much safer.” Jackson added that “ICE officers are facing a 1300% increase in assaults because of dangerous, untrue smears by elected Democrats,” citing a recent incident where an officer allegedly had a finger bitten off by a protestor.

The confrontation highlights growing tensions between federal immigration authorities and Democratic-led states over enforcement practices. Several states have implemented policies limiting cooperation with ICE in recent years, reflecting deep partisan divides on immigration policy.

Sean Higgins, a spokesperson for Governor Sherrill, defended the initiative as necessary protection for New Jersey residents. “Keeping New Jerseyans safe is Governor Sherrill’s top priority,” said Higgins, adding that “in the coming days, she and Acting Attorney General Jennifer Davenport will announce additional actions to protect New Jerseyans from federal overreach.”

During her Daily Show appearance, Sherrill referenced two deaths in Minneapolis involving ICE agents, including that of Alex Pretti, whom she claimed was shot “execution style.” The governor expressed frustration with the agency’s lack of transparency, alleging, “They have not been forthcoming. They will pick people up, they will not tell us who they are, they will not tell us if they’re here legally, they won’t check. They’ll pick up American citizens.”

State-level Republicans have joined the White House in criticizing Sherrill’s portal. New Jersey Assembly Republican Leader John DiMaio issued a statement claiming the initiative “puts everyone at risk” and continues what he described as a troubling pattern of targeting law enforcement.

“For years now, New Jersey has been moving in the wrong direction and making it harder for law enforcement to do their jobs and easier for criminals to exploit the system,” DiMaio stated. “Encouraging people to film and upload law enforcement activity risks escalating tensions and endangering both officers and the public.”

DiMaio emphasized recent ICE operations in New Jersey that resulted in the arrests of individuals convicted of serious crimes, including sex offenders who endangered children. “ICE has taken real criminals off our streets — offenders convicted of serious crimes against children and violent acts that put innocent lives at risk,” he said. “At a time when leaders should be lowering the temperature, this piles on. It sends a message that enforcing the law is something to be shamed instead of respected.”

The dispute highlights the ongoing national debate over immigration enforcement responsibilities and the balance between federal authority and state autonomy. As border security and immigration policy remain contentious political issues, conflicts between federal agencies and state governments appear likely to continue, particularly in states with large immigrant populations.

Governor Sherrill’s office indicates that additional measures regarding federal immigration enforcement will be announced soon, suggesting this confrontation may escalate further in the coming weeks.
