A Virginia man accused of planting pipe bombs outside the Democratic and Republican national committee headquarters just before the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot has entered a not guilty plea in federal court.
Brian J. Cole Jr. of Woodbridge, Virginia, appeared in court Friday for a brief hearing where he denied charges of transporting and attempting to use explosives. If convicted, he faces serious prison time—up to 10 years on one charge and up to 20 years on the second charge, which also carries a mandatory five-year minimum sentence.
According to Justice Department prosecutors, Cole confessed to authorities that he placed the explosive devices outside both political party headquarters hours before thousands of protesters stormed the U.S. Capitol building. Court documents reveal that Cole stated he “hoped the explosives would detonate” and wanted “there would be news about it.”
The pipe bombs were discovered on January 5, 2021, prompting evacuation of both buildings and drawing law enforcement resources away from the Capitol just as tensions were escalating in Washington. Though the devices did not detonate, authorities have long considered them a serious element of the broader security threats surrounding the certification of the 2020 presidential election results.
Investigators say that during questioning after his arrest last month, Cole explained his motives were politically motivated. He reportedly told investigators he believed someone needed to “speak up” for people who thought the 2020 election had been stolen from then-President Donald Trump. Cole allegedly targeted the national party headquarters because he viewed the political parties as being “in charge.”
The case represents one of the most serious alleged terrorist plots connected to the events of January 6, which resulted in multiple deaths, widespread property damage, and over 1,200 arrests to date. While many defendants have faced charges related to trespassing, assault, or obstruction of Congress, Cole’s case involves potentially deadly explosive devices.
The investigation into the pipe bombs had remained one of the most high-profile unsolved aspects of the January 6 events for over three years. The FBI had previously released surveillance footage showing a hooded figure placing the devices the night before the riot, but identification of a suspect proved challenging despite a substantial reward being offered.
Security experts note that pipe bombs are particularly dangerous improvised explosive devices, typically constructed using metal pipes filled with explosive material and designed to send deadly shrapnel in all directions when detonated. Had either device exploded in the busy downtown Washington area, it could have caused significant casualties.
Cole’s arrest marks a significant development in the Justice Department’s ongoing investigation into the Capitol riot and related incidents. The prosecution is part of a broader effort to hold accountable not just those who directly breached the Capitol, but also individuals who allegedly engaged in planning or executing related violent acts.
The case is proceeding amid heightened political tensions as the United States approaches another presidential election, with ongoing debates about political violence and the events of January 6 continuing to divide the nation.
Cole remains in custody as the legal proceedings continue. The court has not yet announced a trial date.

I’m relieved the explosives did not go off, but the fact that someone planted them with the intent to sow chaos and undermine democracy is profoundly concerning. This must be taken extremely seriously.
Agreed. Attacks on our democratic institutions, whether violent or not, are unacceptable and must be met with the full force of the law.

This news is deeply troubling. Even if the devices did not detonate, the intent to cause harm and disrupt the peaceful transfer of power is alarming. I hope the investigation provides more clarity on this situation.
