The Trump-Kennedy Center was targeted in what officials describe as a “calculated, malicious attack” early Friday when an unidentified toxic chemical was poured onto its outdoor ice rink, forcing the cancellation of a scheduled performance.
Center officials said a dark brown-black substance was spread widely across the ice surface, causing severe damage to the outdoor arena. Images provided to media show the material covering large portions of the rink, with what appears to be a gallon-sized milk container visible on the ice.
“Today, a targeted attack on the Trump Kennedy Center vandalized and destroyed our outdoor arena, causing severe damage that we unfortunately must cancel tonight’s performance,” said Roma Daravi, vice president of public relations for the Trump-Kennedy Center. “We are working feverishly to complete repairs so programming can resume tomorrow.”
The vandalism forced the cancellation of a performance by Montreal-based skating company Le Patin Libre. Center leadership emphasized this was not a protest but an act of deliberate vandalism targeting the institution.
“We have turned over video footage to the authorities who are investigating this calculated, malicious attack and hold those responsible accountable,” Daravi added. The Center stated that violence “will not be tolerated” at the venue and pledged to pursue accountability for the damage.
While officials described the substance as “toxic,” the exact chemical composition has not yet been publicly identified. Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident, though neither a suspect nor a motive has been publicly disclosed.
The attack comes during a period of significant transformation for the performing arts center. In December 2025, the board of trustees voted unanimously to rename the facility “The Donald J. Trump and The John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts,” with former President Donald Trump later elected as chairman of the board.
This incident occurs against the backdrop of planned major renovations at the center. The facility is scheduled for a temporary closure beginning July 4 for an extensive restoration and modernization project. Officials have cited approximately $250 million in deferred maintenance and aging infrastructure accumulated over decades at the complex, which originally opened in 1971.
Congress recently appropriated $257 million for renovation work in what has been called “One, Big, Beautiful Bill.” Center leadership has described the project as critical to stabilizing and preserving the nation’s premier performing arts institution for future generations.
The Trump-Kennedy Center has faced financial strain and structural deterioration issues for years before securing this new funding. The planned renovations represent a significant investment in the venue’s future after what officials describe as years of inadequate maintenance funding.
Despite the vandalism, center officials said they are working to restore the damaged outdoor arena as quickly as possible so that scheduled programming can resume. Daravi indicated the institution intends to pursue full accountability for the damage while focusing on restoring services to visitors and performers.
The White House has not yet issued a response regarding the incident at the national cultural center, which traditionally maintains a unique relationship with the executive branch while operating as an independent entity.
Law enforcement agencies are continuing their investigation based on surveillance footage provided by the center, though no arrests have been announced as of press time.

The cost guidance is better than expected. If they deliver, the stock could rerate.
