U.S. Launches Extensive Strikes Against ISIS in Syria Following Soldier Deaths
The United States military conducted significant strikes against Islamic State targets in Syria on Friday, fulfilling President Donald Trump’s promise to retaliate for the deaths of two Iowa National Guard soldiers killed in a terrorist attack last week.
American forces deployed over 100 precision munitions against more than 70 suspected ISIS sites near Palmyra in central Syria. The operation, dubbed “Hawkeye Storm” in reference to Iowa’s nickname, targeted ISIS fighters, infrastructure, and weapons facilities throughout the ancient city.
“This is not the beginning of a war — it is a declaration of vengeance,” War Secretary Pete Hegseth stated on social media platform X. “The United States of America, under President Trump’s leadership, will never hesitate and never relent to defend our people.”
The strikes were conducted in direct response to the December 13 attack that claimed the lives of Sgt. Edgar Brian Torres-Tovar, 25, of Des Moines, and Sgt. William Nathaniel Howard, 29, of Marshalltown. Interpreter Ayad Mansoor Sakat of Michigan was also killed during what officials described as a key leader engagement supporting ongoing counter-terrorism operations in the region.
President Trump had personally received the fallen soldiers during a dignified transfer ceremony earlier this week. In announcing the military action on his Truth Social platform, Trump stated: “Because of ISIS’s vicious killing of brave American Patriots in Syria, whose beautiful souls I welcomed home to American soil earlier this week in a very dignified ceremony, I am hereby announcing that the United States is inflicting very serious retaliation, just as I promised.”
The president also issued a stark warning to potential threats against American personnel: “All terrorists who are evil enough to attack Americans are hereby warned — YOU WILL BE HIT HARDER THAN YOU HAVE EVER BEEN HIT BEFORE IF YOU, IN ANY WAY, ATTACK OR THREATEN THE U.S.A.”
According to U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), the Syrian government supported Friday’s operation and had previously assisted with 10 joint operations in Syria and Iraq following the December 13 attack. Those operations resulted in the deaths or detention of 23 terrorist operatives and yielded crucial intelligence that informed Friday’s strikes.
Navy Admiral Brad Cooper, CENTCOM commander, emphasized the strategic importance of the operation beyond immediate retaliation. “This operation is critical to preventing ISIS from inspiring terrorist plots and attacks against the U.S. homeland,” he said in an official statement.
The attacker who killed the American soldiers had joined Syrian Security Forces just two months before the incident and was reportedly in the process of being removed due to suspected jihadist ties. CENTCOM continues to review the exact connections of the gunman, who was killed by partner forces during the attack.
Syria has been a persistent hotbed of ISIS activity despite the territorial defeat of the terror group in 2019. American forces have maintained a presence in the country as part of a broader counter-terrorism strategy, working alongside local partners to prevent ISIS resurgence.
The region around Palmyra holds strategic significance, as the ancient city has changed hands multiple times during Syria’s prolonged civil conflict. ISIS previously controlled and damaged significant portions of the UNESCO World Heritage site before being pushed out by Syrian government forces.
President Trump noted that Syria, while “soaked in blood which has many problems,” could have “a bright future if ISIS can be eradicated,” suggesting continued U.S. commitment to counter-terrorism operations in the region during his second term.
