President Trump’s newly appointed Greenland envoy, Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry, sought to reassure international concerns Tuesday by emphasizing that the administration aims to establish dialogue with Greenland’s residents rather than pursue territorial acquisition.

“What are they looking for? What opportunities have they not gotten? Why haven’t they gotten the protection that they actually deserve?” Landry said during an appearance on Fox News’ “The Will Cain Show.” He stressed that the United States “has always been a welcoming party” and is not attempting to “conquer anybody” or “take over anybody’s country.”

The comments come amid escalating diplomatic tensions following Landry’s appointment as special envoy to Greenland on Sunday. Danish and Greenlandic leaders have responded with sharp criticism of what they perceive as a potential threat to their sovereignty.

In a joint statement released Monday, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen stated: “We have said it before. Now, we say it again. National borders and the sovereignty of states are rooted in international law. They are fundamental principles. You cannot annex another country. Not even with an argument about international security.”

The diplomatic rift deepened Tuesday when Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen called Trump’s comments “completely unacceptable” and announced plans to summon the U.S. ambassador. Rasmussen emphasized that the Danish kingdom is “sovereign and cannot accept that others question it.”

The controversy stems from President Trump’s previous statements expressing interest in U.S. acquisition of Greenland, which is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. In December 2024, Trump posted on Truth Social that “ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity” for national security purposes. More recently, in January 2025, he described Greenland as an “incredible place” whose people would “benefit tremendously if, and when, it becomes part of our Nation,” concluding with the phrase, “MAKE GREENLAND GREAT AGAIN!”

Greenland’s strategic importance has grown significantly in recent years due to its geographic position in the Arctic and its abundant natural resources. The island sits at a critical juncture for military operations in the North Atlantic and Arctic regions, areas where Russia and China have shown increasing interest. Additionally, Greenland is believed to hold substantial reserves of rare earth minerals, which are crucial components in high-tech industries and defense systems.

The United States already maintains a significant military presence in Greenland, with Thule Air Base in the northwest serving as America’s northernmost military installation. The base provides early missile warning, space surveillance, and strategic communications capabilities.

President Trump’s renewed interest in Greenland marks a continuation of his first-term policy. In 2019, he expressed interest in purchasing the territory, causing a similar diplomatic incident that led to the cancellation of a planned state visit to Denmark.

In his recent social media post announcing Landry’s appointment, Trump emphasized the strategic significance of the region, stating that the governor “understands how essential Greenland is to our National Security, and will strongly advance our Country’s Interests for the Safety, Security, and Survival of our Allies, and indeed, the World.”

As tensions continue to simmer between the United States and Denmark over Greenland’s future, the appointment signals that Arctic geopolitics will likely remain a focal point of Trump’s second administration, with implications for international relations, resource development, and military strategy in the region.
