National Teachers’ Union Under Scrutiny for Political Training Session
The National Education Association (NEA), one of America’s largest teachers’ unions with approximately 3 million members, has come under fire after a watchdog group exposed a recent training session featuring politically charged content. The February 23 event, titled “Advocacy and Free Speech Rights for K-12 Educators,” contained numerous left-leaning political messages and criticisms of Republican policies, according to materials obtained by Defending Education.
The training slides, now made public, make several contentious claims, including that the Department of Education is “now actively committed to violating civil rights” and that educators must protect “vulnerable students.” One particularly stark assertion stated that “Democracy itself is at stake” due to what the NEA characterized as an “unprecedented push to criminalize speech and political opposition.”
Documents from the session show the union taking issue with the previous Trump administration’s designation of Antifa as a terrorist organization, displaying news headlines questioning this classification. The materials also specifically targeted Republican-led states with a slide stating, “It’s not just the Trump Administration…it’s Red State governments as well,” accompanied by headlines criticizing bans on DEI programs in schools and other conservative education policies.
The training emphasized the importance of using students’ preferred gender pronouns, instructing educators that they “can (and should) address students in the way they identify themselves,” regardless of whether this differs from official school records. It also provided guidance for teachers facing potential backlash for displaying Black Lives Matter or Pride flags in classrooms, suggesting strategies to defend such displays.
Chloe Hunt, an investigative reporter with Defending Education who reviewed the materials, criticized the session’s content. “This is not, in any sense, a training on educator rights,” Hunt told Fox News Digital. “It is a political framing of the classroom, in which all Republicans are demonized and conservatives are portrayed as threats to education.”
The revelation comes at a particularly sensitive time for the NEA, which has faced mounting criticism from conservatives and parents’ rights activists who contend the union has strayed from its educational mission. Critics point to millions of dollars the organization has reportedly directed toward progressive causes while student achievement metrics continue to struggle nationwide.
The controversy follows a January whistleblower report from an NEA employee who described the internal culture at the union’s headquarters as “toxic” for those with conservative viewpoints. The anonymous employee told Fox News Digital, “It’s a very liberal place. There’s only a handful of conservatives that work at NEA, and if you are, it’s like you just don’t say anything, because it’s a very toxic environment if you do say something.”
This incident highlights the ongoing tension in American education between traditional union activities focused on teacher working conditions and broader political activism. The NEA, which holds significant influence in education policy discussions nationwide, has increasingly found itself at the center of political debates about the appropriate role of unions in shaping classroom content and school policies.
The training session raises questions about the blurring lines between professional development for educators and political advocacy, particularly as schools continue to navigate contentious social issues. Education experts note that such controversies reflect deeper divisions in how Americans view the purpose of public education and the appropriate boundaries for teacher advocacy within classroom settings.
Fox News Digital reached out to the NEA for comment on the training materials but did not receive a response prior to publication.

As an educator, I can understand the union’s desire to protect the rights and interests of teachers. However, I worry that injecting partisan politics into professional development could be counterproductive and divide teachers along political lines.
That’s a thoughtful perspective. Professional development should aim to unite and empower teachers, not drive them apart based on political affiliation.
As someone who generally supports unions, I’m somewhat disappointed to see this level of partisan messaging in what should be professional development content. I think it’s important for unions to maintain a reputation for fairness and impartiality.
This is an interesting look at the political positions being promoted by the teachers’ union. While I can understand their concerns, I think it’s important to maintain a balanced and nuanced perspective on these issues.
Indeed, unions can sometimes take partisan stances. It would be good to see training materials that present a range of views and encourage critical thinking rather than pushing a particular agenda.
While I understand the union’s desire to advocate for its members, I worry that these training materials could be seen as an attempt to indoctrinate teachers rather than educate them. A more balanced and fact-based approach would be preferable.
While I respect the union’s right to advocate for its members, I’m concerned that these training materials seem to take a very adversarial stance towards the previous administration and conservative policies. A more balanced approach would be preferable.
I agree. Unions should strive for objectivity and avoid demonizing political opponents, even if they disagree with their policies. That kind of rhetoric can breed further polarization.
The claim about Antifa is particularly interesting. I’d be curious to see the union’s justification for disputing the terrorist designation, as well as any counterarguments from other sources. This seems like a complex and contentious issue.
The claims about the Department of Education and threats to democracy seem quite strong. I’m curious to learn more about the specific evidence behind these assertions. Are there objective sources that can help shed light on this?
That’s a fair question. It’s always important to scrutinize claims, especially on sensitive political topics, and look for authoritative, non-partisan information to form our own views.
