Venezuelan National Charged with Assaulting Federal Officer, Seizing Weapon During Immigration Arrest
The Justice Department has filed criminal charges against Arnoldo Jose Marquez-Pulido, a 33-year-old Venezuelan national, following a violent altercation with federal agents during an attempted immigration enforcement operation in Michigan.
According to court documents, the incident occurred earlier this month when officers from the Department of Homeland Security’s Homeland Security Task Force (HSTF) were conducting surveillance at a business in Utica, Michigan. Authorities had received information that individuals living in the United States illegally were working as delivery drivers at the facility.
During the operation, agents observed Marquez-Pulido leaving the parking lot in a registered vehicle. After determining he was in the country illegally, officers attempted a routine traffic stop. Prosecutors allege that Marquez-Pulido briefly pulled over before fleeing at high speed, eventually returning to the business location where he attempted to escape on foot.
The criminal complaint states that when Marquez-Pulido ignored commands to stop and tried to enter the business, an HSTF agent tackled him. During the ensuing struggle, Marquez-Pulido allegedly struck the agent in the face with his elbow and managed to remove the agent’s Glock 19 pistol from its holster. Court documents indicate he briefly gained control of the weapon before the agent regained leverage and additional officers arrived to secure the firearm.
“High speed flight from arrest, fighting federal agents, and grabbing an agent’s gun are not ‘harmless,'” said U.S. Attorney Jerome Gorgon of the Eastern District of Michigan in a statement. “And what’s ‘unfair’ is the fact that Americans pay the price for dangerous illegal aliens.”
The confrontation left two federal agents injured. One suffered a contusion to his elbow, abrasions to his knees and hands, and a contusion to his cheek, while a second agent sustained a knee contusion. Both were treated at a hospital and released.
Federal officials believe Marquez-Pulido entered the United States at a San Ysidro, California port of entry in 2024 without proper documentation or a valid visa. Prosecutors have indicated they will seek to have him held in custody pending further court proceedings.
The case comes amid escalating tensions over immigration enforcement actions under the second Trump administration. DHS and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials have reported a sharp increase in assaults against officers as the administration pursues a more aggressive immigration enforcement agenda.
The incident has become part of the broader political debate surrounding immigration enforcement, particularly as Senate lawmakers remain divided over fully funding the Department of Homeland Security. The partial DHS shutdown has now stretched into its 27th day, with immigration enforcement emerging as a key sticking point in negotiations.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) stated Thursday that most Democrats are ready to fund “most of DHS,” including TSA, Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, FEMA, and the Coast Guard—but not Immigration and Customs Enforcement or CBP. This position has prompted heated exchanges with Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.), who countered that Republicans have repeatedly tried to fund all departments temporarily while negotiations over the ICE budget continue.
While the criminal complaint contains allegations against Marquez-Pulido, he is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court. His case represents one of the more serious recent confrontations between immigration authorities and those targeted for enforcement actions as the administration continues its crackdown on illegal immigration.
