An estimated 32.6 million people watched President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address this week, marking his smallest audience for the annual message since taking office. The viewership represents a decline of four million viewers compared to his speech to Congress last year, according to data released by Nielsen.

The address, which set a record as the longest televised State of the Union by any president, was broadcast across 15 different television networks. Despite the extensive coverage, Trump failed to match the audience numbers he consistently achieved during his first term in office.

Nielsen’s data shows a clear downward trend in viewership for Trump’s major addresses to Congress. During his first term, Trump never attracted fewer than 37.1 million viewers. His previous State of the Union speeches from 2017 through 2019 all exceeded the 40 million mark, with his first address in 2017 drawing his largest audience at 47.7 million viewers.

This year’s viewership numbers closely align with former President Joe Biden’s final State of the Union in 2024, which drew 32.2 million viewers. The slight increase over Biden’s numbers may reflect renewed public interest following Trump’s return to office, though it falls well short of the audience sizes he previously commanded.

Despite the overall decline, the State of the Union address remains one of the most-watched television events of the year, particularly among older Americans. Of Trump’s 32.6 million viewers on Tuesday night, 23.6 million—nearly 72 percent—were aged 55 and above. This demographic breakdown highlights the continued importance of traditional broadcast media in reaching older voters, even as younger audiences increasingly consume political content through social media and streaming platforms.

Fox News Channel dominated the ratings race, serving as the preferred destination for 9.1 million viewers—nearly 28 percent of the total audience. This substantial lead underscores the network’s position as the favored news source among conservative viewers and Trump supporters. ABC News secured second place with 5.1 million viewers, while no other network exceeded 3.6 million viewers.

The viewership distribution across networks reflects the polarized media landscape in the United States, with audiences gravitating toward outlets that align with their political perspectives. Fox News’ commanding lead for a Republican president’s address mirrors similar patterns seen during Democratic administrations, when networks like CNN and MSNBC typically see viewership spikes.

Media analysts note that the overall decline in State of the Union viewership is part of a broader trend affecting traditional television events. Major political addresses, awards shows, and even sporting events have experienced audience erosion as viewing habits fragment across multiple platforms and on-demand options.

The White House has not commented on the viewership numbers. In the past, Trump has frequently highlighted television ratings as a measure of his popularity and success, particularly during his first term. Whether the administration addresses these comparatively lower numbers remains to be seen.

Despite the audience decline, the State of the Union address achieved its fundamental purpose of allowing the President to communicate his policy agenda directly to the American people and members of Congress. The speech covered a wide range of domestic and international issues, setting the tone for the administration’s legislative priorities in the coming year.

As media consumption patterns continue to evolve, future presidential addresses may need to adapt to reach Americans across an increasingly diverse media ecosystem, potentially incorporating more digital-first elements to engage viewers who have moved away from traditional broadcast television.
