Iran Strikes Ignite Fierce Debate in High-Stakes Texas Senate Race

SAN ANTONIO, TX – With Texas primary elections looming, the U.S. and Israeli military strikes against Iran have become a critical flashpoint in the state’s contentious Senate race, sharply dividing candidates along party lines.

Republican Senator John Cornyn and his primary challengers have rallied around President Donald Trump’s decision to launch the attacks, now in their second day, which resulted in the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The operation has also claimed the lives of three American military personnel.

“I think the President did the right thing. It’s amazing to me that President Trump is the only president in my lifetime that is willing to take this kind of decisive action in order to stop the halt of terrorism and also radical Islam,” Cornyn told Fox News Digital on Sunday.

The senator praised the operation as “well planned and very decisive,” while acknowledging that “there’s still a lot more to be done, and unfortunately, Iran still has a lot of ability to inflict casualties on people in the region.”

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, Cornyn’s chief primary rival and a prominent MAGA supporter, expressed gratitude for Trump’s “courageous leadership.” Despite weathering numerous scandals over the past decade, Paxton has maintained strong support among conservative voters.

“President Trump’s Operation Epic Fury is yet another overwhelming and historic military success. Khamenei’s been killed and the terroristic regime threatening our troops and nation has been decimated,” Paxton declared in a social media post.

Congressman Wesley Hunt, an Army veteran and West Point graduate who flew Apache helicopters during his service, joined the chorus of Republican support. “Trump did it again. PEACE THROUGH AMERICAN STRENGTH!” Hunt proclaimed, adding that “now the people of Iran have a chance to be free.”

In stark contrast, the Democratic contenders for the Senate seat have condemned the military action. Representative Jasmine Crockett, a progressive firebrand, criticized Trump for circumventing Congress, writing, “CONGRESS, not the PRESIDENT, but CONGRESS has the EXCLUSIVE authority to declare war!”

Crockett further questioned, “Why is it that this President refuses to even pretend that he cares about following the law?! I’ve been stomping & telling people that this election is life or death!”

State Representative James Talarico, considered a rising star in the Democratic Party, took a more measured approach, simply stating, “No more forever wars” on social media while avoiding specific comments about the strikes during a campaign event in San Antonio on Sunday.

Cornyn swiftly criticized his Democratic opponents, saying, “When the President has, in an act of political courage, ordered the U.S. military, along with our ally Israel, to defeat the number one state sponsor of terrorism and to prevent them from acquiring a nuclear weapon, whose side do they choose? They choose the Iranian side. It’s just mind-boggling to me.”

The senator predicted the Iran issue would remain significant throughout the midterm election cycle, arguing that American voters don’t want “to live in a new world where a nuclear-armed terrorist state can literally terrorize not just the region but the world.”

This year’s Senate contest in Texas is among several nationwide that could determine whether Republicans maintain their 53-47 majority in the chamber. Despite Texas’s reputation as a reliably red state, Democrats see potential vulnerabilities they hope to exploit.

Trump, whose influence over the Republican Party remains substantial, has thus far stayed neutral in the GOP primary. All three Republican candidates have sought his endorsement and attended the former president’s recent event in Corpus Christi.

“They’re in a little race together,” Trump said of Cornyn and Paxton. “You know that, right? A little bit of a race. It’s going to be an interesting one, right? They’re both great people, too.”

As primary day approaches, the Iran strikes have crystallized the stark ideological differences between the parties, offering Texas voters a clear choice between candidates with fundamentally different views on American foreign policy and presidential authority.

That’s a good point. Geopolitical tensions can certainly roil energy and commodity markets. It will be important to monitor how this develops and the potential economic implications.
