Trump Steadfast in Support of DHS Secretary Noem Despite Democratic Calls for Removal

President Donald Trump continues to voice strong support for Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, even as Democratic lawmakers intensify calls for her removal following controversial immigration enforcement operations in Minneapolis.

“I think she’s doing a very good job,” Trump told reporters Tuesday. “The border is totally secure. You forget, we had a border that I inherited where millions of people were coming through. Now, we have a border where no one is coming through.”

According to sources close to the administration, Trump personally reached out to Noem before Thursday’s Cabinet meeting to reaffirm his confidence in her leadership at DHS, which oversees critical agencies including U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the U.S. Secret Service, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The controversy stems from a pair of fatal shootings in Minneapolis amid an immigration crackdown connected to a fraud investigation focused on the local Somali community. The operation has resulted in dozens of arrests and sparked intense protests in the Twin Cities region.

The most recent incident occurred Saturday when U.S. Border Patrol agents fatally shot Alex Pretti, who was reportedly armed with a 9mm pistol while recording federal immigration enforcement operations. This followed the shooting of Renee Good earlier in January by an ICE agent. Two Border Patrol agents have been placed on administrative leave pending investigation.

Democratic leaders have responded with sharp criticism and calls for Noem’s removal. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries issued a particularly strong statement on Thursday, saying, “She’s got to go — we are dead serious. If Kristi Noem is not fired immediately, impeachment proceedings will commence.” He added that “she needs to be put on ice permanently.”

Despite the pressure from Democrats, the White House has maintained a united front in defending Noem. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt emphasized during a Monday briefing that “Secretary Noem still has the utmost confidence and trust of the president of the United States, and she’s continuing to oversee the entire Department of Homeland Security.”

When asked directly if Noem would step down, Trump responded with a firm “No.”

The administration’s immigration enforcement strategy in Minnesota took a new turn Monday when Trump deployed Border Czar Tom Homan to oversee operations there, replacing Border Patrol Commander Gregory Bovino. Some observers interpreted this move as a signal of diminishing confidence in Noem, but administration officials insist this was part of a broader strategy to address the situation effectively.

Noem herself has remained defiant in the face of criticism. During an appearance on Fox News’ “Hannity” Thursday evening, she stated: “These radicals are attacking me, but I’m just doing my job. I’m following the law, enforcing the laws like President Trump promised that he would do to keep people safe in this country.”

She added, “We’re going to continue to go after these criminals. We’re going to remove them before they have the chance to murder more Americans, to create more Angel moms and to go out and harm our children and our grandchildren.”

The situation in Minneapolis has been further complicated by ongoing protests against federal law enforcement officials, with demonstrators demanding agents leave the city. These protests have occasionally turned chaotic, with federal agents reportedly deploying tear gas against demonstrators.

The administration’s immigration enforcement operations in Minnesota began early this year in response to what officials describe as a sweeping fraud scandal involving members of the state’s Somali community. According to a source close to Noem, when politicians like Senator Tim Kaine or Representative Jeffries are “calling for your head,” it often reinforces rather than undermines job security within the Trump administration.

As the controversy continues to unfold, it appears that Noem’s position remains secure, backed by the president’s consistent public and private expressions of support.
