President Trump has threatened to deploy Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to airports across the United States if Democrats fail to meet his budget demands to end the partial government shutdown.

In a strongly worded statement posted on his Truth Social platform Saturday, Trump declared he would order ICE agents to conduct security operations at airports with a focus on arresting undocumented immigrants, particularly those from Somalia.

“If the Radical Left Democrats don’t immediately sign an agreement to let our Country, in particular, our Airports, be FREE and SAFE again, I will move our brilliant and patriotic ICE Agents to the Airports where they will do Security like no one has ever seen before,” Trump wrote.

The former president specifically mentioned targeting immigrants from Somalia, accusing them of having “totally destroyed” Minnesota with what he characterized as the approval of state officials including Governor Tim Walz, the state’s Attorney General, and Congresswoman Ilhan Omar.

This threat comes amid an increasingly tense standoff over federal funding that has resulted in the partial shutdown of government services. The current impasse centers on disagreements between Republicans and Democrats regarding immigration policy and border security measures, issues that have been cornerstone concerns throughout Trump’s political career.

Immigration enforcement at airports would represent a significant shift in tactics. Currently, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) handles entry screening at international terminals, while the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) manages general security. ICE traditionally focuses on interior enforcement operations away from ports of entry.

Legal experts note that such a deployment would raise complex jurisdictional questions. Immigration attorney Margaret Wong of the American Immigration Lawyers Association explained in a recent analysis that “airports operate under specific federal authorities with established security protocols. Introducing another federal agency with a different mandate would create significant operational challenges.”

The proposal also raises questions about resource allocation within the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). ICE currently employs approximately 20,000 personnel nationwide, with responsibilities spanning immigration enforcement, human trafficking investigations, and customs violations. Diverting significant numbers to airport security would potentially impact other enforcement priorities.

Congressional Democrats have swiftly condemned Trump’s statement. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer characterized it as “another attempt to use immigration as a political wedge rather than seeking real solutions.” Representative Bennie Thompson, ranking member of the House Homeland Security Committee, called the proposal “a dangerous politicization of our nation’s transportation infrastructure.”

The focus on Somali immigrants specifically has drawn criticism from civil rights organizations. The Council on American-Islamic Relations released a statement denouncing what they described as “the targeting of a specific ethnic community” as “both unconstitutional and contrary to America’s founding principles.”

Minnesota, which Trump specifically referenced, is home to one of the largest Somali American communities in the United States. Many Somali refugees began settling in the state in the 1990s following civil war in Somalia, and the community has established significant economic and cultural roots there.

The shutdown negotiations continue to evolve as essential government services face increasing strain. Aviation experts have expressed concern about airport operations during the shutdown, with former FAA Administrator Michael Huerta noting that “air traffic control, security screening, and other critical functions are already operating with reduced staff and resources.”

As the standoff continues, both sides appear to be hardening their positions. Whether Trump’s threat will influence budget negotiations remains to be seen, but it has certainly intensified the already heated debate over immigration policy and government funding.
