President Trump vows to target Indiana Senate leader over redistricting defeat

President Donald Trump has publicly declared his intention to “take out” Indiana Senate Majority Leader Rod Bray after the Republican legislative leader opposed a congressional redistricting plan championed by the president.

In a pointed message on Truth Social, Trump accused Bray of having “betrayed” the Republican Party when the Indiana Senate voted down a new map last month that would have created two additional right-leaning congressional districts in the state.

“I was with David McIntosh of the Club for Growth, and we agreed that we will both work tirelessly together to take out Indiana Senate Majority Leader Rod Bray, a total RINO, who betrayed the Republican Party, the President of the United States, and everyone else who wants to MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!” Trump wrote.

The president’s message took on a threatening tone when he added, “We’re after you Bray, like no one has ever come after you before!”

McIntosh, a former Indiana congressman who helped found both the Federalist Society and the Club for Growth, quickly endorsed Trump’s plan, writing on social media platform X: “President Trump and I are aligned. Rod Bray is going down.”

The dispute centers on Trump’s nationwide push to redraw congressional districts ahead of the crucial midterm elections. While Texas, Missouri, North Carolina and Ohio have complied with the president’s redistricting initiatives, Indiana’s Republican-controlled Senate blocked similar efforts.

In December, the Indiana Senate voted 31-19 against a proposed new congressional map, with 21 Republicans joining 10 Democrats in opposition. The bill had previously passed the Indiana House by a 57-41 margin, despite a dozen GOP lawmakers voting against it. Had the redistricting plan been approved, it would have eliminated two Democratic-held congressional districts.

Bray had consistently maintained that there wasn’t sufficient support in the chamber to proceed with redistricting, despite escalating pressure from the Trump administration. The president had repeatedly urged Bray and undecided senators to support the measure, saying they “need encouragement to make the right decision.”

The administration’s redistricting push in Indiana included direct calls from President Trump to state lawmakers and two visits from Vice President JD Vance last fall specifically to discuss the issue.

After the measure failed, Vance joined in criticizing Bray, particularly following the Virginia state Senate’s recent approval of a constitutional amendment allowing its Democrat-controlled legislature to redraw U.S. House maps before the midterms.

“I’d like to thank @bray_rodric for not even trying to fight back against this extraordinary Democrat abuse of power,” Vance wrote on X. “Now the votes of Indiana Republicans will matter far less than the votes of Virginia Democrats. We told you it would happen, and you did nothing.”

The confrontation highlights the intensifying battle over congressional redistricting nationwide as both parties position themselves for the upcoming midterm elections. Trump’s aggressive stance against members of his own party who resist his redistricting agenda signals the high stakes involved in controlling the House of Representatives.

Political analysts note that redistricting fights have become increasingly contentious as narrow margins in Congress make every seat potentially decisive for party control. The president’s willingness to target fellow Republicans demonstrates his determination to maintain influence within the party and secure favorable electoral maps for GOP candidates.

Bray’s office has not yet responded to requests for comment on the president’s statements.
