Veteran Border Chief Takes Command in Minneapolis Amid Immigration Tensions

Minneapolis has emerged as the latest flashpoint in the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement efforts, with Border Czar Tom Homan assuming command of federal operations following two fatal shootings and escalating protests in the Twin Cities.

Homan, a career law enforcement official with over four decades of experience in immigration enforcement, has worked under both Republican and Democratic administrations. His appointment comes at a critical juncture as tensions mount between federal authorities and local officials over immigration enforcement tactics.

“Tom Homan is a decorated career law enforcement professional whose service has spanned multiple presidential administrations, both Republican and Democratic. He is a no-nonsense American patriot who is dedicated to making his country better,” said America First Legal president Gene Hamilton, who previously worked alongside Homan during Trump’s first term.

Deployed to Minnesota on Monday, Homan is now reporting directly to President Donald Trump, replacing Border Patrol Commander Gregory Bovino. His arrival follows two high-profile shootings involving federal law enforcement that left two Americans dead – incidents that Democrats have characterized as “murder” while comparing ICE operations to the “Gestapo.”

The White House has defended the appointment and maintained its commitment to immigration enforcement. “Tom Homan is a patriot with decades of experience effectively protecting American communities and deporting criminal illegal aliens,” said White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson. “The Trump Administration will never waver in standing up for law and order and protecting the American people.”

Administration officials insist that despite the leadership change, their mission remains focused on arresting and deporting undocumented immigrants who pose threats to public safety. One White House official noted that Trump wanted to prevent further violence while working with state and local leaders to remove public safety threats.

Democrats, however, have condemned the broader ICE operations as heavy-handed. Senate Democratic Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called the situation in Minnesota “appalling” and has pressed for new oversight and restrictions on ICE’s conduct following the deaths of protesters Renee Good and Alex Pretti.

Homan’s extensive background includes beginning his federal law enforcement career in 1984 as a Border Patrol agent with the Immigration and Naturalization Service. During the Obama administration, he was tapped to lead ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations in 2013, overseeing a significant surge in deportations. In 2016, President Obama awarded Homan the Presidential Rank Award for Distinguished Service, recognizing his leadership.

“Thomas Homan deports people. And he’s really good at it,” the Washington Post wrote at the time, describing him as “the Washington bureaucrat in charge of rounding up, detaining and kicking illegal immigrants out of the country.”

After serving as acting ICE director during Trump’s first term from 2017 to 2018, Homan has now returned to a key immigration enforcement role as border czar.

Chad Wolf, who served as acting Secretary of Homeland Security during Trump’s first administration, described Homan’s appointment to oversee the Minnesota operation as “a stroke of absolute genius.”

“Homan is not a political firebrand looking for headlines. He is a career law enforcement professional, with over 30 years of experience at ICE and U.S. Border Patrol, who understands the operational realities of immigration enforcement,” Wolf noted.

Since arriving in Minnesota, Homan has met with Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and Governor Tim Walz in what he described as “productive” discussions. He’s proposed a compromise approach that could reduce federal agents’ street presence if local leaders allow ICE access to jails to take custody of removable immigrants in controlled settings.

“More agents in the jail means less agents in the street,” Homan said Thursday. “This is common-sense cooperation that allows us to draw down on the number of people we have here.”

Homan has vowed not to leave the Twin Cities “until the problem is gone,” effectively making Minnesota a test case for whether sanctuary-style resistance can be traded for cooperation on immigrant detainers in local jails.
