President Donald Trump announced Monday that Iran has made “a significant proposal” following his Easter Sunday ultimatum, though he deemed the offer insufficient as tensions between the two nations continue to escalate.

“They made a proposal, and it’s a significant proposal, a significant step,” Trump told reporters during the traditional White House Easter Egg Roll. “It’s not good enough, but it’s a very significant step. They are negotiating now. And they have made a very significant step. We’ll see what happens.”

The President’s comments come amid ongoing friction with Iran following the downing of a U.S. F-15E fighter jet. Trump noted that both airmen from the downed aircraft were “recovering very well” after being rescued from behind enemy lines, a mission that will be detailed in a news conference scheduled for later Monday.

“When you do thousands and thousands of flights, and you have one plane shot down and not mortally, the two pilots got out – they got a little bit lucky,” Trump remarked, adding, “In a way you need a little bit of luck. Also, they got a little bit lucky. That’s all they got.”

The current standoff centers on Trump’s demand that Iran reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime chokepoint through which approximately 20% of the world’s oil passes. The waterway’s closure has already sent ripples through global energy markets, with oil prices climbing amid supply concerns.

Trump delivered stark warnings about potential consequences should Iran fail to comply with his demands, threatening severe infrastructure damage.

“We are obliterating that country, and I hate to do it, but we’re obliterating, and they just don’t want to say uncle – they don’t want to cry, as the expression goes, uncle, but they will,” Trump stated. “And if they don’t, they’ll have no bridges, they’ll have no power plants. They’ll have no anything.”

The President alluded to even more severe consequences beyond infrastructure targets but declined to elaborate further.

In a surprising revelation, Trump suggested he would prefer to seize Iran’s oil resources if given complete freedom of action. Iran possesses approximately 157 billion barrels of proven oil reserves, the fourth-largest in the world according to OPEC figures.

“If I had my choice, what would I like to do? Take the oil, because it’s there for the taking; there’s not a thing they can do about it,” Trump said. “Unfortunately, the American people would like to see us come home. If it were up to me, I’d take the oil. I’d keep the oil.”

He added that such an approach would “make plenty of money” while better serving the Iranian people, whom he characterized as being poorly governed.

Looking ahead to potential resolution scenarios, Trump pointed to the United States’ arrangement with Venezuela as a possible model for future relations with Iran. He emphasized that any agreement would require Iran to abandon its nuclear weapons program, which has been a persistent concern for U.S. policymakers across multiple administrations.

“Hopefully it could be over with quickly,” Trump said before returning to the Easter festivities. “Again, there are lots of different alternatives. We have many alternatives.”

The President concluded by noting the extensive damage already inflicted on Iran’s infrastructure, claiming, “We could leave right now, and it would take them 15 years to rebuild what they have. We could leave right now, but I want to finish it up.”

This latest development occurs against the backdrop of decades of hostility between Washington and Tehran, with relations deteriorating significantly since Trump withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal in 2018 and reimposed sanctions that have severely damaged Iran’s economy.
