In a poignant moment during Tuesday’s State of the Union address, President Donald Trump honored two National Guard members who were victims of an attack near the White House last November, presenting the Purple Heart to Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe and posthumously to the family of Army Specialist Sarah Beckstrom.

The solemn ceremony took place as Trump paused his address to acknowledge the sacrifice of these service members. “I’m going to ask a highly respected General James Seward to present Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe and the great family of Sarah Beckstrom, with the award created by our late, great president, George Washington himself,” Trump said. “It’s called the Purple Heart. We love you all.”

As the president spoke, Major General James “Jim” D. Seward, Adjutant General of the West Virginia National Guard, carried out the formal presentation, pinning the Purple Heart on Staff Sergeant Wolfe and presenting Specialist Beckstrom’s medal to her parents in the viewing gallery.

Beckstrom, only 20 years old, did not survive the November attack that occurred just blocks from the White House. Wolfe, 24, was critically injured but survived despite initial dire predictions about his recovery.

“Your daughter was a true American patriot,” Trump told Beckstrom’s parents during the ceremony, “and she will be greatly missed.” He added, “She was a great person. I saw reports on her. They’ve never seen anything like it. So sorry.”

Turning to Wolfe, the president remarked on his remarkable recovery: “The doctors thought that Andrew was gone, but his mother said, ‘No, no, Mr. President, Andrew will be fine. He’s going to make it.’ I’ve never seen anything like it.”

Federal authorities are investigating the shooting as a terror attack. According to reports, the alleged shooter is an Afghan refugee who entered the United States through Operation Allies Welcome during the 2021 military withdrawal from Afghanistan, raising questions about the vetting process for refugees admitted during that chaotic period.

The attack has intensified debates over immigration policy and security protocols for refugees, particularly those admitted during emergency evacuations. Critics have called for stronger vetting procedures, while others emphasize the isolated nature of this incident compared to the thousands safely resettled.

West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey issued a statement praising the Purple Heart presentation as a “solemn and unforgettable moment, one that ensured their courage and sacrifice were honored not only by West Virginia but also before the entire nation.” The recognition brought national attention to the service and sacrifice of these National Guard members from West Virginia.

In December 2025, Beckstrom was laid to rest with full military honors at the West Virginia National Cemetery in Grafton. Her funeral drew hundreds of mourners, including military personnel, government officials, and community members who came to pay their respects to the young soldier.

The House of Representatives had previously passed a unanimous resolution honoring both National Guard members. Representative Jill Tokuda, a Democrat from Hawaii, captured the bipartisan sentiment when she stated, “Spc. Beckstrom and Staff Sgt. Wolfe represent the very best of our nation. Young Americans driven by service, compassion, and a sense of duty. Their willingness to step forward to serve their communities and their country reflects the highest ideals of military and public service.”

The Purple Heart, one of the nation’s oldest and most respected military decorations, recognizes service members wounded or killed in action. Its presentation during the State of the Union address—with Supreme Court justices and members of Congress in attendance—underscored the solemnity of the occasion and the nation’s gratitude for those who serve in uniform.

As the investigation into the attack continues, the recognition of these two National Guard members serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing threats faced by military personnel, even on American soil, and the profound sacrifices made by those who choose to serve their country.
