Air Force Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe received the Purple Heart medal during President Trump’s State of the Union address on Tuesday, marking his remarkable recovery after surviving a gunshot wound to the head while on patrol with the National Guard in Washington last year.

In an emotional moment that drew bipartisan applause, Gen. James Seward, head of the West Virginia National Guard, pinned the medal on Wolfe’s civilian suit as the president paused his speech for the ceremony.

“With God’s help, Andrew has battled back from the edge of death—and we’re talking about the edge—on his way to a miraculous recovery,” Trump said, acknowledging Wolfe in the gallery. “Nice to see you.”

The president highlighted the unwavering determination of Wolfe’s mother, who remained convinced her son would recover despite the severity of his injuries. As Trump spoke, she buried her head in her son’s chest, visibly moved by the recognition of his survival and service.

The ceremony also served as a solemn tribute to U.S. Army Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, Wolfe’s colleague who did not survive the November 26 ambush. Beckstrom, also a member of the West Virginia National Guard, died on Thanksgiving Day from injuries sustained in the attack.

“Your daughter was a true American patriot and she will be greatly missed,” Trump told Evalea and Gary Beckstrom, the fallen soldier’s parents, who were present in the gallery. The chamber responded with several minutes of respectful applause from both sides of the political aisle.

Wolfe and Beckstrom were deployed to Washington as part of a National Guard mission stemming from Trump’s executive order aimed at addressing what the administration described as rampant crime in the nation’s capital. The November ambush that claimed Beckstrom’s life and severely injured Wolfe shocked the military community and raised questions about the safety of National Guard troops deployed on domestic missions.

The alleged perpetrator of the attack, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, 29, has been charged in connection with the shooting. He has pleaded not guilty and remains in custody. According to authorities, Lakanwal drove across the country from his home in Washington state specifically to carry out the attack on the National Guard members.

During his address, Trump noted that Lakanwal entered the United States in 2021 through Operation Allies Welcome, a Biden administration initiative that evacuated and resettled tens of thousands of Afghans following the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan. The program was created to protect Afghans who had worked with American forces during the two-decade war.

“He shouldn’t have been in our country,” Trump asserted during his speech, connecting the incident to his broader immigration policies. In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Trump had halted asylum decisions, signaling a hardening stance on immigration that has been a hallmark of his administration.

The incident has reignited debates over immigrant screening procedures and the vetting processes for those entering the country through humanitarian programs. It has also led to calls for enhanced security measures for National Guard personnel operating domestically, particularly in urban environments.

The Purple Heart ceremony for Staff Sgt. Wolfe represented one of the rare moments of unity during an otherwise politically charged State of the Union address. Military service and sacrifice remain among the few topics that consistently generate bipartisan respect in Washington’s polarized environment.

As Wolfe continues his recovery journey, his recognition at the State of the Union highlights both the dangers faced by military personnel, even on American soil, and the resilience of those who serve in uniform.
