Three days after President Donald Trump’s unexpected endorsement of Republican Rep. Julia Letlow for Louisiana’s Senate race, sources indicate she is likely to launch a campaign as early as this week, creating a significant challenge for incumbent GOP Sen. Bill Cassidy.

Trump’s endorsement, delivered via social media on Saturday, has sent shockwaves through Louisiana’s political landscape. “Should she decide to enter this RACE,” Trump wrote, “Julia Letlow has my Complete and Total Endorsement. RUN, JULIA, RUN!!!”

The 44-year-old Letlow, who was elected to Congress in 2021 following the COVID-related death of her husband Luke shortly before he was to take office, responded with a statement hinting at her intentions: “My mission is clear: to ensure the nation our children inherit is safer and stronger. This United States Senate seat belongs to the people of Louisiana, because we deserve conservative leadership that will not waver.”

For Cassidy, a physician who chairs the powerful Senate Health committee and is seeking a third six-year term, Trump’s intervention represents a severe political setback in the solidly Republican state. It also creates a major headache for Senate Majority Leader John Thune, who has publicly backed Cassidy and recently campaigned alongside him in Louisiana.

According to Republican sources, Letlow had indicated she would not challenge Cassidy without Trump’s explicit support. Another source confirmed that Trump reached out to Thune on Friday to give the Senate’s top Republican advance notice about the endorsement.

Despite this development, Thune continues to support Cassidy, who was previously endorsed by the National Republican Senatorial Committee. However, the Senate Leadership Fund (SLF), the top super PAC supporting Senate Republicans and aligned with Thune, has announced it will remain neutral in the Louisiana race.

“The mission of the Senate Leadership Fund is to preserve and expand the Republican Senate majority. Anything that distracts from our efforts to beat Democrats in November is unhelpful,” SLF Executive Director Alex Latchum stated.

The 68-year-old Cassidy remains defiant, declaring on social media: “I’m proudly running for re-election as a principled conservative who gets things done for the people of Louisiana. If Congresswoman Letlow decides to run, I am confident I will win.”

The financial dynamics of the race could shift dramatically with Trump’s endorsement. Cassidy currently holds a significant fundraising advantage with nearly $10 million in campaign funds compared to Letlow’s $2.3 million as of the last reporting period. However, Letlow is likely to see a substantial influx of donations following a formal campaign announcement.

Cassidy’s vulnerability stems partly from his vote to convict Trump during the Senate impeachment trial following the January 6, 2021 Capitol attack. Although Cassidy supported several of Trump’s controversial cabinet nominees early last year, including Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for Health Secretary, this hasn’t been enough to win Trump’s favor. Adding to Cassidy’s challenges, the Make America Healthy Again PAC, which has close ties to Kennedy, announced Sunday it would financially support Letlow.

The race has already attracted several other Republican contenders. Louisiana State Treasurer John Fleming, a former congressman who served in Trump’s first administration, claimed recent polling shows his campaign “expanding our lead on Bill Cassidy, while Cassidy’s numbers continue to drop.” State Sen. Blake Miguez and State Rep. Julie Emerson are also seeking the GOP nomination, while former Rep. Garrett Graves is considering entering the race.

Trump’s involvement in Louisiana has increased speculation about whether he will intervene in other contentious Republican Senate primaries, particularly in Texas, where longtime Sen. John Cornyn faces challenges from Trump allies Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and Rep. Wesley Hunt ahead of the early March primary.

The Louisiana Senate race illustrates Trump’s ongoing influence within the Republican Party and his willingness to challenge incumbent senators who have crossed him, even at the potential cost of intra-party conflict during a critical election cycle.
