President Trump announced his administration is conducting a comprehensive review following the fatal shooting of Alex J. Pretti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse, by a U.S. Border Patrol agent in Minneapolis.

“We’re looking, we’re reviewing everything and will come out with a determination,” Trump told The Wall Street Journal, stopping short of stating whether the federal agent’s actions on January 24 were appropriate.

The incident occurred when Pretti was filming federal officers on a Minneapolis street. Initial statements from federal officials claimed Pretti approached agents with a 9mm handgun and resisted disarmament. However, bystander videos and eyewitness accounts circulating online have raised questions about this version of events, particularly regarding whether Pretti posed a threat to officers when he was shot.

Trump acknowledged the gravity of the situation while noting details about the victim. “I don’t like any shooting. I don’t like it,” he said, adding that Pretti carried “a very powerful, fully loaded gun with two magazines… That doesn’t play good either.”

The operation that led to the fatal encounter was targeting Jose Huerta-Chuma, an undocumented immigrant with a criminal record that included domestic assault causing bodily harm, disorderly conduct, and driving without a valid license.

This marks the second death resulting from confrontations between federal immigration officers and civilians in Minneapolis this year. On January 7, Renee Good was shot and killed by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent during a separate operation. These incidents have sparked protests and intensified scrutiny of ICE’s role in domestic law enforcement actions.

In his comments, Trump connected the federal presence in Minnesota to what he characterized as extensive welfare fraud in the state, suggesting that immigration enforcement was necessary to address broader systemic issues. “It’s the biggest fraud anyone has seen,” the president stated, highlighting this as a central justification for increased federal operations in the region.

While indicating that federal agents would eventually withdraw from their current operations, Trump remained vague about the timeline. “At some point we will leave. We’ve done, they’ve done a phenomenal job,” he told the Journal, adding, “We’ll leave a different group of people there for the financial fraud.”

The Minneapolis incidents have created significant tension between federal authorities and local communities. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt emphasized the importance of cooperation among law enforcement agencies in addressing these challenges.

“Nobody, including President Trump, wants to see people get shot or hurt,” Leavitt stated, urging officials to work more collaboratively with the administration in managing issues related to undocumented individuals residing in the country illegally.

The shooting has generated substantial political fallout, with some Republican lawmakers breaking with the administration’s stance. Senator Bill Cassidy has publicly expressed concerns about the incident, signaling potential fractures within Trump’s party over the aggressive immigration enforcement tactics.

As the administration conducts its review, community activists and civil rights organizations continue to demand transparency and accountability regarding the circumstances of Pretti’s death. The case has reignited debates about the use of force by federal agents, the scope of immigration enforcement operations, and the balance between national security priorities and civil liberties protections.

The outcome of the administration’s review could have significant implications for immigration enforcement policies and federal-local law enforcement relationships moving forward.
