Michigan Democrats Downplay Ties to Radical Imam with Iranian Connections
Legacy Democrats and Michigan lawmakers are dismissing concerns over their connections to Imam Mohammad Ali Elahi, who recently eulogized Iran’s Ayatollah Khamenei and operates a mosque reportedly linked to Iranian propaganda efforts.
Photos showing the Dearborn Heights-based Imam with prominent Democratic figures disappeared from his social media accounts shortly after Fox News Digital contacted him and his Islamic House of Wisdom (IHW). However, screenshots and remaining images reveal the Imam posing with high-profile Democrats including former President Bill Clinton, Vice President Kamala Harris, and former Secretary of State John Kerry.
The Imam’s social media presence also showcased connections with Michigan’s top political leaders. Governor Gretchen Whitmer included Ali Elahi in her 2023 inauguration ceremony, where he delivered a Muslim prayer tribute. Other Michigan officials photographed with the Imam include Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist and Senator Gary Peters.
Beyond photo opportunities, state campaign finance records indicate Ali Elahi has financially supported several Michigan Democrats. Abdul El-Sayed, currently running for U.S. Senate, received over $800 from the Imam in 2017. Gilchrist received more than $1,000, while former Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, now running an independent gubernatorial campaign, received $500. The Imam has also made numerous small-dollar donations through ActBlue to various Democratic candidates and organizations.
When questioned about their relationships with Ali Elahi following his tribute to Khamenei—who was killed by an Israeli airstrike last month and was known for “Death to America” rhetoric—most Democrats either did not respond or minimized their associations.
“Senator Peters routinely attends events with his constituents across Michigan,” a spokesperson for the Michigan senator stated. “Peters has long said that Iran and its leaders, like Ayatollah Khamenei, are bad actors, and he strongly believes that we must ensure Iran never has nuclear weapons.”
A Clinton spokesperson dismissed their interaction as “60 seconds of social niceties at a funeral. Shaking someone’s hand isn’t a connection or an endorsement. They don’t know each other.”
Duggan’s campaign similarly downplayed any relationship despite multiple photos showing the former mayor with Ali Elahi, including one where they appear to be embracing. “In his 12-year tenure, Mayor Duggan constantly reached out to congregations of all faiths, visiting 40-50 churches, mosques, and synagogues each year,” a campaign spokesperson said. “He attended close to 1,000 political events in that time and greeted and took photos with people at each of them.”
Republican strategist Colin Reed criticized the Democrats’ reluctance to distance themselves from the controversial Imam. “The unwillingness of public officials to distance themselves from someone so controversial would be troubling enough under normal circumstances, but doubly so during a time of conflict when Americans’ lives hang in the balance,” Reed said.
Ali Elahi’s international connections have raised additional concerns. As recently as September, he was photographed with Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian at the United Nations General Assembly in New York. He met with Pezeshkian again at the 2024 UN Assembly, sharing photos on social media along with captions praising the Iranian leader and criticizing Israel.
A report from George Washington University’s Program on Extremism highlighted the Imam’s ties to the Islamic Republic, noting he served as the head of the Iranian Navy’s “political ideological office” in 1982—an allegation Ali Elahi addressed but did not deny in a 2023 speech.
In 2023, U.S. lawmakers urged then-Attorney General Merrick Garland to investigate Ali Elahi’s mosque, describing it as “a significant purveyor of extremist propaganda, in line with the Iranian regime’s views.” That same year, the Imam traveled to Iran and shared photos and videos of his trip on social media.
The controversy highlights growing tensions surrounding political figures’ associations with religious leaders who have expressed support for regimes hostile to the United States, particularly in key battleground states like Michigan.

While everyone deserves due process, these allegations raise red flags. The public deserves to know the full extent of the Democrats’ relationship with this Imam and whether it compromises their positions on Iran and national security.
Dismissing these concerns outright is troubling. The Democrats should provide a clear explanation of their ties to the Imam and demonstrate that there is no conflict of interest or national security risk involved.
If these reports are accurate, this is a serious issue that warrants thorough investigation. The American people need to have confidence that their elected officials are not beholden to or influenced by foreign adversaries.
This is concerning if the Democrats have close ties to an Imam with alleged Iranian propaganda links. Transparency and vetting of political associates is important, especially when it comes to foreign influence.
I’m curious to learn more about the Imam’s background and the nature of his connections to Michigan Democrats. It’s crucial that our leaders maintain distance from individuals or organizations with anti-American ties.
