Texas Senate Candidate Talarico Refutes “Defund Police” Allegations Amid Campaign Controversy

Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico has forcefully denied accusations that he supports defunding the police, calling such claims a “flat out lie” in response to criticism from Republican opponents.

The controversy stems from comments Talarico made during a 2019 podcast interview, where he suggested that increasing police presence in schools without sufficient mental health resources contributes to a “culture of violence.” Republicans have seized on these remarks as evidence of anti-police sentiment as they seek to defend their Senate majority in a race that Democrats believe could flip blue for the first time in decades.

“James opposes defunding the police and has a proven track record voting to send billions of dollars to support law enforcement,” said JT Ennis, a spokesperson for Talarico’s campaign, in a statement addressing the allegations.

At issue are Talarico’s comments on the Trey Blocker Show, where the former middle school teacher discussed his concerns about school safety approaches. “We’re all concerned about school safety and recent school shootings, and that concern, in some ways, has been channeled unproductively toward militarizing schools and toward kind of leaning into a culture of violence and adding more law enforcement officials into campuses,” Talarico said during the interview.

The comments referred to his first bill as a Texas state representative, which would have mandated schools maintain specific ratios of mental health professionals to police officers on campus. The legislation would have required schools with more than 5,000 students to hire four mental health professionals for every law enforcement official, with scaled requirements for smaller institutions.

Talarico clarified in the interview that police should respond when “a crime has been committed, a law has been broken or there’s an immediate danger to students,” but argued that “law enforcement officials shouldn’t be conducting behavior interventions” or counseling students. Despite some bipartisan support, the bill ultimately stalled in committee.

Republican National Committee spokesman Zach Kraft criticized Talarico’s position, describing it as “a scary combination of two of James Talarico’s favorite things: defunding the police and pushing his woke agenda on kids.” Matt Mackowiak, senior advisor to incumbent Senator John Cornyn’s campaign, doubled down on the criticism, calling Talarico a “‘defund the police’ radical who wants to make our schools and our streets less safe.”

Talarico’s campaign defended the proposal, arguing that it “supports the police by adding desperately needed mental health officials to help prevent tragic events like the mass shooting at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, Texas.” His spokesperson further stated that while opponents “play politics with school shootings by presenting a false choice between funding law enforcement and funding mental health resources for kids, James will continue standing up against both political parties to fix this broken, corrupt political system.”

The police funding controversy adds to a series of challenges for Talarico, who recently secured the Democratic nomination in an upset victory over Representative Jasmine Crockett. His campaign has already faced scrutiny over past progressive statements, including claims that “God is nonbinary.”

Despite these controversies, Talarico remains competitive in a race critical to both parties’ hopes of securing a Senate majority. He awaits the outcome of the May GOP primary runoff, which will determine whether he faces incumbent Senator John Cornyn or Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton in the general election.

The dispute highlights the ongoing political tensions surrounding policing and school safety in Texas, particularly in the aftermath of tragic school shootings like the one in Uvalde. As the campaign progresses, the interpretation of Talarico’s past comments and policy proposals will likely remain a key point of contention between the candidates.
