Republican Party Faces Midterm Warning Signs After Surprising Texas Loss
A stunning Democratic upset in a traditionally Republican stronghold of Texas has sent shockwaves through the GOP, with party leaders calling the defeat a “wake-up call” as Republicans work to defend their narrow congressional majorities in this year’s midterm elections.
Democrat Taylor Rehmet, a machinist and Air Force veteran, defeated Republican Leigh Wambsganss by approximately 14 percentage points in Saturday’s runoff election for Texas’ 9th state Senate district in the Fort Worth area. The victory came despite Republicans dramatically outspending Democrats and deploying high-profile support from Governor Greg Abbott and a last-minute endorsement from President Donald Trump.
The result is particularly alarming for Republicans given that Trump carried the district by 17 points in 2024, and it marks the first time in four decades that a Democrat will represent the seat in the northern part of Tarrant County.
“It’s clearly a wake-up call for Republicans,” longtime Texas-based Republican strategist Brendan Steinhauser told Fox News Digital. “If Democrats can win this seat, it puts a lot of other seats in play.”
The Democratic National Committee quickly labeled it a “Shockwave Victory” and highlighted that “Democrats have now flipped 26 state legislative seats since Trump retook office, while Republicans have flipped zero.”
Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick acknowledged the gravity of the situation, calling the defeat “a wake-up call for Republicans across Texas. Our voters cannot take anything for granted.” Florida Governor Ron DeSantis added that while special elections don’t always predict general election outcomes, “a swing of this magnitude is not something that can be dismissed.”
The loss comes amid growing concerns about Trump’s controversial immigration policies. Following two fatal shootings by federal agents of U.S. citizens protesting against aggressive deportation efforts in Minnesota, the president’s poll numbers on immigration have declined. While Trump’s approval ratings on border security stood at 52%-47% in the latest Fox News poll, his handling of immigration was underwater at 45%-55%.
This could have particular relevance in Tarrant County, Texas’ third most populous county, where nearly a third of residents are Hispanic. Although Trump made significant gains with Hispanic voters nationally in 2024, that support may not be transferring to other Republican candidates.
“I think we might have expected that the support among Hispanic voters in Texas for Trump might translate to all Republicans. That may not be the case,” Steinhauser noted. “Some of the other imagery coming out of Minnesota is giving people pause, especially Hispanic Texans.”
The political headwinds facing Republicans extend beyond immigration. The latest Fox News national poll shows 54% of Americans believe the nation is worse off than a year ago when Trump took office, with only 31% saying the U.S. is in a better position. Just 30% rated the economy as in excellent or good shape, and Trump’s overall approval remains negative at 44%-56%.
This presents a significant challenge for Republicans, who successfully campaigned on inflation concerns in 2024 but now see Trump’s approval on combating inflation at just 35%, according to the same poll.
Looking ahead to November, when Democrats need a net gain of just three seats to recapture the House majority, DNC Chair Ken Martin said the Texas results “prove that no Republican seat is safe.”
Republican strategists suggest the party needs to highlight its legislative accomplishments to change the narrative. Lance Trover pointed to the GOP’s sweeping “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” which includes numerous tax cuts that many voters will begin to feel this spring. “Republicans have passed significant legislation. It’s on us to go out and sell it and remind voters that if Democrats have their way we are on a fast track to socialism,” Trover said.
Colin Reed echoed this strategy: “If the economy starts booming on the backs of the One, Big Beautiful Bill’s provisions taking hold, the Republican Party needs to remind America that this was a policy uniformly supported by one party and opposed by another. That’s the GOP’s big bet heading into the midterms.”
Despite the concerning loss, Lieutenant Governor Patrick remained optimistic about Republican prospects in November. “I know the energy and strength the Republican grassroots in Texas possess. We will come out fighting with a new resolve, and we will take this seat back in November,” he predicted.
