Virginia Governor Faces Pressure on Sanctuary Policies Amid Rising Crime Concerns

RICHMOND, VA — Virginia’s Democratic Governor Abigail Spanberger is facing mounting pressure from the Department of Homeland Security to end sanctuary policies in the state following a series of violent crimes allegedly committed by undocumented immigrants.

The governor has so far remained silent on DHS calls to reverse course on immigration enforcement policies. “Governor Spanberger must end her sanctuary policies that allow these illegal aliens onto our streets and work with DHS to protect the citizens of the commonwealth,” the agency stated in a recent social media post.

The controversy centers on several high-profile cases in Fairfax County, which has experienced multiple violent crimes allegedly committed by undocumented immigrants. DHS officials have highlighted that three of the four defendants in murder cases in Fairfax County so far in 2026 are in the country illegally.

Among the recent cases gaining attention is that of Misael Lopez Gomez, a 28-year-old Guatemala native charged with murdering his 3-month-old daughter. Another Guatemalan national, Anibal Armando Chavarria Muy, 38, faces charges for fatally stabbing a man in his home. Additionally, Abdul Jalloh, a 32-year-old Sierra Leone national with a reported history of over 30 prior arrests, was charged with stabbing someone to death at a bus stop in February.

The situation has intensified with the case of Israel Flores Ortiz, 19, who faces nine counts of assault and battery for allegedly groping girls at a Fairfax County high school. According to local media reports, victims and parents claim Ortiz approached approximately 12 girls in crowded hallways and groped their private areas.

Shortly after taking office, Spanberger rescinded policies that facilitated cooperation between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities. This January 17 executive action reversed measures implemented by her Republican predecessor, Glenn Youngkin.

In justifying the policy shift, Spanberger argued that Virginia’s resources would be better allocated to enforcing state laws rather than federal immigration statutes. “Virginians have been deprived of critical public safety and local law enforcement to divert their limited resources for use in enforcing federal civil immigration laws,” the governor stated in a press release.

“Federal authorities should enforce federal civil immigration laws — law enforcement in the Commonwealth should prioritize the safety and security of all residents in Virginia, the enforcement of local and state laws and coordination with federal entities on criminal matters,” she added.

Spanberger’s approach aligns with policies adopted by Democratic governors in states like California and Illinois, where restrictions have been placed on local cooperation with federal immigration enforcement efforts.

DHS officials have been vocal in their criticism of the governor’s stance. Lauren Bis, DHS Deputy Assistant Secretary, specifically targeted Fairfax County’s “sanctuary politicians,” urging them not to “release this predator from jail back into our communities to assault more teenage women,” referring to the Ortiz case. Bis further criticized Spanberger for “siding with criminal illegal aliens over American citizens” by ending the previous administration’s cooperation with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The federal agency has emphasized that effective immigration enforcement depends on partnerships with local authorities. “ICE can only detain illegals for the purpose of removal,” a DHS spokesperson explained when asked about coordination procedures for suspect transfers.

The controversy comes at a politically sensitive time for Spanberger, with recent polling suggesting a decline in her popularity. The immigration debate has intensified nationwide, with sanctuary policies becoming a focal point in discussions about public safety, local authority, and federal immigration enforcement responsibilities.

As pressure mounts from federal officials and concerned citizens, Spanberger’s continued silence on the DHS request signals that immigration enforcement will likely remain a contentious issue in Virginia politics for the foreseeable future.
