Florida International University Investigates Racist, Antisemitic Group Chat Linked to GOP Officials
Florida International University has launched a formal investigation into a group chat containing violently racist slurs, antisemitic comments, and misogynistic language that involved students and several prominent conservative leaders at the university. The chat was reportedly started by an official with the Miami-Dade chapter of the Republican Party.
According to the Miami Herald, which viewed and independently verified the conversations, the offensive messages have prompted swift action from university officials and condemnation from state Republican leadership. Campus police are now investigating the incident in coordination with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies.
FIU President Jeanette Nunez, herself a former Florida lieutenant governor and Republican state lawmaker, issued a strong statement on Thursday denouncing the behavior.
“FIU does not and will not tolerate violence, hate, discrimination, harassment, racism or antisemitism,” Nunez said. “This is not who we are. This is not what FIU stands for.”
The Republican Party of Florida has also distanced itself from the comments, issuing a statement condemning what it called “repugnant comments” that are “completely contrary” to the organization’s values. The state GOP confirmed it has initiated “an internal review of this situation.”
This incident at FIU follows a similar controversy last fall when New York’s Republican State Committee suspended a Young Republican organization after the release of a group chat that included jokes about rape and casual commentary about gas chambers.
The Republican Jewish Coalition joined in condemning the FIU chat on Friday. “Antisemitism and bigotry have no place in the Republican Party,” said Sam Markstein, a spokesman for the coalition.
The controversy comes amid increasing concerns about extremist rhetoric on college campuses nationwide. Universities across the country have been grappling with a rise in both antisemitism and Islamophobia, particularly since the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel and the subsequent conflict in Gaza.
Florida International University, with over 56,000 students, is one of the largest public universities in Florida and is known for its diverse student population. The Miami-Dade area itself is among the most ethnically and culturally diverse regions in the United States, making the reported comments particularly jarring within this community context.
Political analysts note that the incident could have broader implications for the Republican Party in Florida, which has worked to expand its support among Hispanic voters in South Florida in recent election cycles. Miami-Dade County, once a Democratic stronghold, has increasingly trended toward Republicans in recent elections.
The investigation comes at a sensitive time politically, with Florida continuing to be a crucial battleground state in national elections. How the university and the Republican Party handle this controversy could impact voter perceptions heading into future elections.
Neither the university nor law enforcement officials have released details about potential disciplinary actions or criminal charges that might result from the investigation. It remains unclear how many students were involved in the chat or how long it had been active before being exposed.
Educational institutions nationwide have been developing more comprehensive policies to address hate speech and discriminatory behavior on campuses, balancing concerns about free speech with the need to maintain safe and inclusive learning environments for all students.
University officials indicated they would provide updates as the investigation progresses, but emphasized that their primary concern is ensuring the safety and well-being of the entire campus community.

This is a worrying development that highlights the deep divides in our society. While freedom of speech is important, hate speech crossed a line. FIU leadership is right to take this seriously and address it head-on.
Absolutely. The university has a responsibility to foster an environment of mutual respect and understanding for all students.
It’s disheartening to see such toxic behavior from those in positions of power. FIU must uphold its values and send a strong message that this kind of rhetoric will not be tolerated, regardless of political affiliation.
Unacceptable that an official with the Miami-Dade GOP would be involved in promoting such abhorrent views. This is a disturbing reminder of the work still needed to combat extremism and bigotry in our political system.
Agreed. Public officials should be held to the highest ethical standards. FIU must send a clear message that this behavior is completely unacceptable.
Deeply troubling to see such hateful rhetoric from representatives of the GOP. Racism and antisemitism have no place in our society and must be swiftly condemned. FIU is right to investigate this matter thoroughly and take appropriate disciplinary action.
I hope FIU’s investigation leads to real accountability for those responsible. Diversity and inclusion are core values in academia, and any attempts to undermine that should be met with swift and decisive action.
Racism and antisemitism are abhorrent, and have no place in any community, let alone at a university. FIU is right to take immediate action to investigate and address this issue.
This is a deeply concerning situation that requires thorough investigation and accountability. FIU’s commitment to inclusivity and diversity must be reaffirmed in the face of such hateful conduct.
