In a significant move to address persistent economic pressures facing Americans, the Small Business Administration (SBA) is launching a new initiative aimed at rolling back federal regulations that officials say have contributed to rising prices across multiple sectors of the economy.

The newly formed “Deregulation Strike Force,” spearheaded by the SBA’s Office of Advocacy, will coordinate a comprehensive government-wide review to identify and eliminate regulations that hamper economic growth and drive up costs for consumers and businesses alike.

SBA Administrator Kelly Loeffler, who will oversee the initiative, stated that excessive Biden-era regulations imposed an estimated $6 trillion in compliance costs on American families and small businesses during the previous administration.

“Bidenomics brought historic new highs in inflation that crushed working families and small businesses, driven in part by the massive bureaucracy that heaped trillions in new federal regulations onto the backs of hardworking Americans,” Loeffler said in a statement announcing the program.

The initiative specifically targets regulations affecting sectors particularly vulnerable to inflationary pressures, including housing and construction, healthcare, agriculture and food production, energy and utilities, and transportation. Officials believe these areas represent critical points in the supply chain where regulatory burdens have directly contributed to higher consumer prices.

This regulatory overhaul aligns with President Donald Trump’s broader economic agenda as his administration begins its second term. During his campaign, Trump consistently highlighted the impact of regulations on everyday affordability issues that resonated with voters still feeling the squeeze from persistent inflation.

“Through our Deregulation Strike Force, SBA is leveraging its unique authority to deregulate across the federal government and cut senseless red tape that drove up costs for small businesses and consumers, especially in industries hit hardest by Bidenflation,” Loeffler added.

The housing sector stands as a particular focus for the initiative. With home affordability reaching crisis levels in many parts of the country, the administration believes that cutting through construction regulations could help lower barriers to new housing development and eventually ease price pressures in the real estate market.

Economic analysts note that regulations can create significant compliance costs for businesses, particularly small enterprises that lack the resources and scale to absorb such expenses efficiently. These costs are often passed on to consumers in the form of higher prices for goods and services.

According to SBA officials, the agency has already played a significant role in eliminating an estimated $98.9 billion in federal regulations since Trump returned to office. Some of the actions taken include changes to reporting rules, energy-efficiency standards, and diesel exhaust fluid requirements.

The administration claims these changes have contributed to nearly $200 billion in total regulatory savings thus far, though the full economic impact remains to be seen as these policies work their way through the economy.

The initiative comes at a time when many Americans continue to report financial strain despite some cooling in headline inflation numbers. Recent polls suggest affordability concerns remain top of mind for consumers across partisan lines, with many households still adjusting their spending habits to accommodate higher prices for everyday necessities.

Business groups have generally welcomed the deregulatory approach, while consumer and environmental advocates caution that some regulations provide important protections that shouldn’t be hastily removed. The challenge for the administration will be identifying regulations that genuinely create unnecessary costs without eliminating those that serve important public interests.

The SBA has not yet provided a specific timeline for when the public might see tangible results from this deregulatory push, but officials indicate that the work is already underway and will accelerate in the coming months.
