U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the Munich Security Conference on Saturday, emphasizing that President Donald Trump is seeking “a solution that ends the bloodshed once and for all” in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Rubio shared news of the meeting on social media, posting a photo of himself shaking hands with the Ukrainian leader. The high-level diplomatic engagement comes as preparations intensify for trilateral peace talks set to begin Tuesday in Geneva.

“Met with Ukrainian President Zelenskyy on Ukraine’s security and deepening defense and economic partnerships,” Rubio wrote on X, formerly Twitter, highlighting the Trump administration’s desire to resolve the conflict.

Earlier that day, Zelenskyy confirmed he had also spoken with Trump envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner ahead of the Geneva negotiations. The Ukrainian leader expressed optimism about the upcoming talks, stating, “We count on the meetings being truly productive.”

The meeting follows recent discussions in Abu Dhabi, which took place in late January and early February. Zelenskyy indicated that not all details from these talks could be shared publicly, noting that Ukraine’s negotiating team would present the country’s position next week.

These diplomatic efforts have taken on new urgency following Zelenskyy’s previous claim that the United States had established a June deadline for Moscow and Kyiv to reach a peace agreement. “The Americans are proposing the parties end the war by the beginning of this summer and will probably put pressure on the parties precisely according to this schedule,” Zelenskyy stated after the Abu Dhabi talks, according to the Associated Press.

The Ukrainian president added that if the June timeline is not met, the Trump administration would likely increase pressure on both Moscow and Kyiv to conclude an agreement.

In his recent comments, Zelenskyy expressed gratitude for American support, saying, “We greatly appreciate that America consistently maintains a constructive approach and is ready to assist in protecting lives. I thank President Trump, his team, and the people of the United States for their support.”

The diplomatic push extends beyond bilateral U.S.-Ukraine relations. Rubio also reported meeting with his G7 counterparts at the Munich conference, where they discussed “ongoing efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war, promote stability in Venezuela, and address global threats to achieve international peace and prosperity.”

The Secretary of State characterized these efforts as advancing “President Trump’s vision of pursuing peace through strength,” signaling a comprehensive diplomatic strategy that extends beyond the immediate conflict in Eastern Europe.

The Munich Security Conference has served as a key venue for these discussions, bringing together world leaders and diplomats at a critical juncture in the conflict. The war, which began with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, has resulted in tens of thousands of casualties and created Europe’s largest refugee crisis since World War II.

The upcoming Geneva talks represent one of the most significant diplomatic initiatives to date in seeking to resolve the conflict. They will bring together representatives from Ukraine, Russia, and the United States in a format that offers the potential for direct negotiations.

As the June deadline approaches, pressure is mounting on all parties to find a sustainable solution to a conflict that has destabilized European security, disrupted global supply chains, and caused tremendous human suffering. The involvement of high-level Trump administration officials signals the priority being placed on resolving this conflict in the early months of Trump’s second term.
