Texas Rep. Tony Gonzales Forced into Runoff Amid Scandal Involving Deceased Staffer

Republican Congressman Tony Gonzales of Texas will face a runoff election after failing to secure more than 50% of the vote in Tuesday’s primary for his southwest Texas district. The two-term representative has been embroiled in controversy following allegations that he had an affair with a married staffer from his Uvalde office who later died by suicide.

The staff member reportedly set herself on fire near her home in September 2025. Gonzales, a married father of six, has vehemently denied the allegations and claimed the deceased staffer’s husband attempted to blackmail him.

“During my six years in Congress, not a single formal complaint has been levied against my office. Now days away from an election, coordinated political attacks reign in. IT WON’T WORK,” Gonzales wrote on social media platform X in late February.

Despite his denials, several fellow House Republicans have called for his resignation as the scandal has intensified. Gonzales has rejected these demands and is now fighting to retain his seat against Brandon Herrera, a firearms activist and social media influencer who has gained the endorsement of the House Freedom Caucus’s campaign arm.

This isn’t the first electoral matchup between the two. Herrera previously challenged Gonzales in 2024, losing by fewer than 400 votes. Now, after neither candidate secured a majority in Tuesday’s four-way Republican primary, they will face off again in a May runoff that will likely determine who represents Texas’s 23rd congressional district.

Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) has been among the most vocal critics within the party, announcing this week that she would force a vote on a measure requiring the House Ethics Committee to disclose information on lawmakers accused of sexually harassing their staff. Mace has explicitly called for Gonzales to resign.

“I think it’s pretty unbecoming, any individual in power engaging in activities like that with their staff,” said Rep. Eli Crane (R-Ariz.), who has endorsed Herrera. While acknowledging Gonzales’s right to “due process,” Crane characterized the alleged behavior as “despicable.”

Rep. Mark Harris (R-N.C.) echoed similar concerns, calling the allegations “extremely concerning” but noting that “this is in the hands of the voters in that district right now.”

Sources within the House Republican Conference indicated that many members had been privately hoping voters would remove Gonzales, sparing them the difficult decision of whether to expel him. The political calculations are complicated by the GOP’s razor-thin majority in the House, which currently stands at just one or two votes.

Retiring Rep. Troy Nehls (R-Texas) cited this narrow margin when arguing against pushing Gonzales to resign immediately. “He’s got a problem here, don’t get me wrong. The optics are horrible,” Nehls told reporters. “But I would in no way ever resign right now.” He added that if Gonzales were to step down, Republicans risked losing their majority and “giving the gavel to [House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y.].”

The controversy comes at a precarious time for House Republicans, who are already concerned about their ability to maintain control of the chamber in the upcoming midterm elections. Several recent special elections have highlighted potential vulnerabilities in Republican turnout.

Voters in Texas’s 23rd district, which spans a large portion of the state’s southwest border region, will make their final decision in the May runoff election, determining whether Gonzales can overcome both the serious allegations and the challenge from his conservative opponent.
