In a surprising turn of events, Democratic Rep. Al Green of Texas faces a tough runoff election after significant opposition from cryptocurrency industry backers, according to statements he made following his primary election last week.

Green, a 20-year congressional veteran who has become known for his vocal opposition to former President Donald Trump, cited approximately $1.5 million in spending against his campaign by crypto industry groups as a key factor in the close race.

“They made it clear that I was a target, and they had a fake poll that showed that they were going to win by some large margin,” Green told Fox News Digital. “I think, actually, they called a victory party last night assuming that it was over. Of course, I and others knew that it would be a runoff.”

The contentious race pits Green against former Harris County Attorney Christian Menefee, a fellow Democrat who now serves in Congress. Their face-off was precipitated by Texas’s redistricting changes that forced the two incumbents to compete for the same 18th Congressional District seat.

Green wasted no time challenging his opponent to a debate ahead of the runoff. “I’m challenging Mr. Menefee to a debate. I think we should have a debate right away,” he said, before criticizing Menefee’s attendance record. “I also challenge him to come to work. In his first month in Congress, after having sworn that he was going to come here and represent the people and vote, he missed a week, an entire week without voting.”

The veteran congressman highlighted his own attendance record, claiming he has made over 97% of his votes during his two decades in Congress. He further alleged that Menefee failed to attend a classified briefing regarding Iran.

Green has made national headlines in recent years for his multiple attempts to impeach Trump and for being removed from the House chamber twice during State of the Union addresses. When asked if his outspoken criticism of Trump might hurt his reelection chances, Green doubled down on his position.

“If it cost me an election, I would do it,” Green stated firmly. “I just think that this president is a racist. I hope you pick that up. Yeah, he’s a racist and we have to challenge him. We shouldn’t have a racist in the White House.”

The Texas runoff comes amid growing influence of cryptocurrency interests in political campaigns nationwide. The industry has dramatically increased its political spending in recent election cycles, targeting both supporters and opponents of crypto-friendly legislation. Green’s race represents one of the most significant examples of the sector flexing its financial muscle in a Democratic primary.

Political analysts note that the race also highlights the challenges faced by longtime incumbents when redistricting forces intra-party competitions. The 18th Congressional District, which includes parts of Houston, has long been a Democratic stronghold, making the primary effectively the decisive election for the seat.

Menefee, who is considerably younger than Green, represents a new generation of Democratic leadership in the region. His campaign has emphasized the need for fresh representation, while Green has leaned on his experience and legislative record.

The runoff election is expected to draw significant attention from national political observers, particularly as an indicator of whether opposition to Trump remains a motivating factor for Democratic primary voters or if other issues—such as cryptocurrency regulation—have gained greater importance in party politics.

As the campaign moves forward, both candidates will likely intensify their outreach to district voters, with Green’s challenge for an immediate debate setting the stage for what promises to be a heated contest between two established Democratic figures in Texas politics.
