Rep. Omar Blames Trump for Chemical Spray Attack, Cites Pattern of Threats

Rep. Ilhan Omar returned to the public eye Wednesday, just one day after being sprayed with an unknown chemical substance during a Minneapolis town hall event. The Democratic congresswoman used the news conference at Karmel Mall to pin responsibility for the incident on former President Donald Trump, claiming his rhetoric has consistently fueled threats against her.

“I think my presence here should tell you that fear and intimidation doesn’t work on me,” Omar told supporters and media. “What the facts have shown since I’ve gotten into elected office is that every time the president of the United States has chosen to use hateful rhetoric to talk about me and the community that I represent, my death threats skyrocket.”

The attack occurred Tuesday when 55-year-old Anthony James Kazmierczak allegedly used a syringe to spray Omar with an unidentified liquid. Security personnel immediately tackled Kazmierczak, who remains in jail facing preliminary third-degree assault charges. The incident happened as Omar was calling for the abolition of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem following fatal shootings of two individuals during immigration enforcement operations in Minneapolis.

Omar claimed the alleged attacker was “upset that Trump’s order to deport Somalis was not yielding enough deportations of Somalis.” Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, which Omar represents, includes Minneapolis and is home to one of the largest Somali diaspora communities in the United States.

The progressive lawmaker described a dramatic increase in threats following her election to Congress in 2019, which coincided with Trump’s first term.

“I became a freshman who nobody should have actually known I existed because I wielded no power, to having the most death threats of any member of Congress,” Omar explained. “To the point where I had to have six Capitol Police officers providing 24-hour detail to me and my family.”

Omar added that threat levels decreased substantially during President Biden’s administration but claimed they have surged again since Trump returned to office. “And now my death threats are the highest of the members of Congress,” she stated.

When asked about the attack, Trump dismissed the incident, telling ABC News: “No. I don’t think about her. I think she’s a fraud. I really don’t think about that. She probably had herself sprayed, knowing her.”

Omar shot back at Trump’s suggestion that she may have staged the attack. “I wouldn’t be where I am at today, having to pay for security, having the government to think about providing me security if Donald Trump wasn’t in office, and if he wasn’t so obsessed with me,” she said. “It is ironic that just last night he was on stage moments before I was attacked talking about me, and then when asked about my attack, he said, I don’t think about her.”

The incident comes amid heightened political tensions nationwide and increased security concerns for elected officials. Federal law enforcement agencies have repeatedly warned about rising threats against public figures across the political spectrum in recent years.

Throughout Trump’s presidency and now in his second term, he has repeatedly criticized Omar and other progressive lawmakers, particularly members of what became known as “The Squad,” over various policy positions and their opposition to his agenda.

Omar, one of the first two Muslim women elected to Congress and the first Somali-American member, has remained a vocal critic of Trump’s immigration policies and has consistently called for ICE reforms throughout her tenure in office.
