Omar Defends Support for Pandemic Food Program Despite Link to Major Fraud Case

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) defended her backing of the 2020 MEALS Act this week, expressing no regrets about supporting the pandemic-era legislation despite its connection to Minnesota’s alleged $250 million “Feeding Our Future” fraud scheme.

“Absolutely not, it did help feed kids,” Omar told Fox News Digital when asked if she regretted pushing for the bill.

Omar introduced the MEALS Act in March 2020 to modify Department of Agriculture food and nutrition programs, allowing waivers on requirements for school meal programs during pandemic-related school closures. The legislation relaxed many standard requirements, including those related to federal costs.

These waivers have since become the center of intense scrutiny after Minnesota’s “Feeding Our Future” program became the target of what federal authorities describe as the largest pandemic fraud scheme in the state’s history. The scheme exploited the loosened regulations, particularly the USDA’s decision to relax requirements for non-school-based distributors to participate in federal food programs.

According to FBI Director Kash Patel, the fraud ranks as “one of the worst” in Minnesota history. More than 75 individuals have been charged in connection with the scheme as of November 2025, federal prosecutors said.

The scale of the operation was massive—conspirators allegedly claimed to have served millions of meals during the pandemic while actually using the funds for personal gain. Authorities uncovered fabricated invoices, fake attendance records, and fraudulent distribution claims from hundreds of so-called food sites across Minnesota. Charging documents reveal that approximately 300 “food sites” served little or no food, with organizations created specifically to launder money intended for feeding children.

“Stealing from the federal government equates to stealing from the American people—there is no simpler truth,” FBI Special Agent in Charge Alvin Winston said in a statement to Fox News Digital.

The investigation has already prompted legislative reform in Minnesota, with officials indicating that additional charges are expected as the probe continues.

“The egregious fraud unveiled in the Feeding our Future case epitomizes a profound betrayal of public trust,” Patel said earlier this year. “These individuals misappropriated hundreds of millions in federal funds intended to nourish vulnerable children during a time of crisis, redirecting those resources into luxury homes, high-end vehicles and extravagant lifestyles while families faced hardship.”

The fraud has become a political lightning rod in recent weeks. President Donald Trump has announced new actions to crack down on fraud schemes in Minnesota, which he has characterized as a “hub of money laundering activity.” The Trump administration has also initiated a Treasury Department investigation into claims that taxpayer dollars were allegedly diverted to the terrorist organization al-Shabaab.

Trump and his officials have criticized Minnesota Governor Tim Walz’s administration, claiming the criminal activity stems from “incompetence” and mismanagement by the Democratic governor and former vice presidential candidate.

“It’s not surprising that the president has chosen to broadly target an entire community,” Walz responded, adding, “This is what he does to change the subject.”

The controversy has taken on additional dimensions with Trump suggesting earlier this month that Omar, who fled Somalia as a child, “shouldn’t be allowed to be a congresswoman,” prompting fierce backlash from Democrats and members of Minnesota’s congressional delegation.

Omar called Trump’s remarks “vile” and said on social media, “His obsession with me is creepy. I hope he gets the help he desperately needs.”

The fraud investigation continues to impact Minnesota politically and economically, with FBI officials confirming that the investigation remains active and suggesting more developments are forthcoming.
