Former U.S. Representative Katie Porter displayed an explicit anti-Trump message during the California Democratic Party’s 2026 state convention in San Francisco on Saturday, emphasizing her opposition to the former president as part of her gubernatorial campaign pitch.
“Yeah, that’s right, f— Trump,” Porter declared to convention attendees while holding up a sign with the profane message. “Together, we’re gonna kick Trump’s a– in November. I’ll stand up to Trump and his cronies just like I did in Congress, with or without my whiteboard.”
The former congresswoman, known for her use of whiteboard presentations during congressional hearings, made it clear that her campaign extends beyond opposing Trump. “This election for governor is about more than defeating Trump,” she told the crowd. “We know what Trump is willing to do. He’s willing to kill people in the streets, to rip away healthcare, and to ruthlessly attack our democracy. But this governor’s race asks us, what are we willing to do, what is California willing to do for our democracy?”
Porter’s provocative remarks come as she positions herself in what is expected to be a competitive race for California’s governorship in 2026, when current Governor Gavin Newsom will be term-limited. The convention provided Democratic candidates an important platform to appeal to party activists and secure potential endorsements.
Her confrontational approach toward Trump reflects a strategy increasingly seen among Democratic candidates nationwide who aim to energize their base by presenting themselves as firm opposition to the former president. Similar tactics have been employed elsewhere, including by Illinois Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton, who is seeking a U.S. Senate seat and recently released a video featuring people using the same explicit phrase about Trump.
Porter’s gubernatorial bid has already garnered significant support, including an endorsement from prominent progressive Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, under whom Porter studied law before entering politics.
“Senator Elizabeth Warren knows what it means to fight for working families. Together, we’ve held the powerful accountable, put people before billionaires, and worked hard to lower costs for Americans,” Porter wrote on social media, acknowledging the endorsement.
Warren reciprocated with her own statement: “From the moment Katie Porter set foot in my consumer law class, I knew that she would be a warrior for working families. Katie will champion the kind of bold, progressive vision that California workers and families deserve, and I’m proud to endorse her for California Governor.”
The Warren endorsement could prove valuable for Porter, particularly among progressive voters in California. Their relationship dates back to Porter’s time as Warren’s student, and they have maintained political alignment on consumer protection and economic issues throughout Porter’s congressional career.
Porter’s gubernatorial campaign comes after she chose not to seek reelection to her House seat, instead focusing on the statewide race. During her time in Congress, she gained national attention for her pointed questioning of corporate executives and government officials during hearings.
California’s 2026 gubernatorial race is expected to attract several high-profile Democratic candidates given the state’s strong Democratic leaning. The primary contest may ultimately prove more consequential than the general election in determining who will lead the nation’s most populous state.
Fox News Digital reported that it reached out to the White House and the Republican National Committee for comment on Porter’s remarks, but no responses were included in the initial reporting.
