In a rare public rebuke, Pope Leo condemned President Donald Trump’s threats against Iran as “truly unacceptable” just hours before Trump announced a two-week delay in military strikes against the Middle Eastern nation.

Speaking to journalists outside his residence in Castel Gandolfo, Italy, the head of the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics expressed grave concern over the escalating conflict and called for an immediate cessation of hostilities.

“Today, as we all know, there has also been this threat against the entire people of Iran, and this is truly unacceptable,” the pope stated firmly. “There are certainly issues of international law here, but even more so a moral issue for the good of the whole entire population.”

The pontiff’s comments appeared to directly reference Trump’s earlier statement on Truth Social, where the president wrote: “A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again. I don’t want that to happen, but it probably will… God Bless the Great People of Iran!”

Following the pope’s condemnation, Trump announced he would postpone military action against Iran for two weeks, citing productive diplomatic channels. The delay hinges on Iran agreeing to the “COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz,” according to Trump’s social media post.

The president indicated that his administration had received a 10-point proposal from Iranian officials that American negotiators believe could serve as “a workable basis” for further talks.

The Strait of Hormuz represents a critical maritime chokepoint through which approximately 20% of global oil shipments pass. Its closure has sent shock waves through energy markets and contributed to economic instability worldwide.

Pope Leo emphasized that attacks on civilian infrastructure violate international law and represent “a sign of the hatred, the division, and the destruction the human being is capable of.” He characterized the conflict as “unjust” and one that is “not resolving anything.”

“In fact, we have a worldwide economic crisis, energy crisis situation in the Middle East of great instability, which is only provoking more hatred throughout the world,” the pope said. “So come back to the table. Let’s talk, let’s look for solutions in a peaceful way.”

In an unusual move that underscores the gravity of the situation, the pope directly called on ordinary citizens to engage with political leadership. He urged people to “contact the authorities — political leaders, congressmen — to ask them to work for peace and to reject war always.”

This direct confrontation between the Vatican and the White House marks a significant diplomatic development. While popes traditionally maintain diplomatic neutrality in specific conflicts, they often advocate for peaceful resolutions to international disputes.

Reuters reported that Pope Leo had previously made a direct appeal to Trump last week, urging the president to find an “off-ramp” to end the war with Iran. Tuesday’s public statement, however, represents a dramatic escalation in the Vatican’s diplomatic approach.

The pope’s plea emphasized humanitarian concerns, particularly for vulnerable populations. “Remember the children, the elderly, the sick,” he said, who “have already become, or will become, victims of this continued warfare.”

As negotiations continue during the two-week pause in hostilities, global attention remains fixed on whether diplomatic efforts can prevent further military escalation in a region already experiencing significant instability and humanitarian challenges.

The standoff comes amid broader concerns about global economic stability, with energy prices fluctuating wildly and stock markets responding nervously to each development in the conflict.
