SpaceX CEO Elon Musk Dismisses Anthropic Leader’s Comments on AI Consciousness
Elon Musk offered a terse response after Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei suggested his company’s AI model Claude might have developed consciousness, a claim that emerges amid a growing dispute between the AI company and the Pentagon.
“He’s projecting,” Musk wrote on X, responding to a post about Amodei’s recent comments regarding Claude showing symptoms of anxiety. The curt retort from Musk, who heads SpaceX, Tesla and xAI, highlights the increasingly contentious debate about AI capabilities and limitations.
In a recent interview with The New York Times, Amodei addressed the possibility of AI consciousness with notable caution. “We’ve taken a generally precautionary approach here,” Amodei said. “We don’t know if the models are conscious.”
He expanded on this uncertainty, stating, “We are not even sure that we know what it would mean for a model to be conscious or whether a model can be conscious. But we’re open to the idea that it could be.”
Amodei pointed to research in interpretability, a field dedicated to understanding AI model decision-making processes. “We’re putting a lot of work into this field called interpretability, which is looking inside the brains of the models to try to understand what they’re thinking,” he explained, noting that researchers have found “activations” in the models associated with concepts like anxiety.
These comments come at a particularly sensitive time for Anthropic, as the Trump administration has ordered federal agencies to cease using the company’s technology following a dispute with the Pentagon over usage restrictions.
The conflict centers on the Pentagon’s request to utilize Anthropic’s AI tools for “all lawful purposes,” which Amodei has resisted. The CEO has expressed concerns that the government might employ their technology for applications such as “mass domestic surveillance” or “fully autonomous weapons” – use cases Anthropic is unwilling to support.
President Donald Trump addressed the situation directly last Friday in a statement on Truth Social: “The Leftwing nut jobs at Anthropic have made a DISASTROUS MISTAKE trying to STRONG-ARM the Department of War, and force them to obey their Terms of Service instead of our Constitution. Their selfishness is putting AMERICAN LIVES at risk, our Troops in danger, and our National Security in JEOPARDY.”
The president directed all federal agencies to “IMMEDIATELY CEASE all use of Anthropic’s technology,” allowing a six-month phase-out period for agencies already using the company’s products.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth followed up with additional measures, designating Anthropic as a “Supply-Chain Risk to National Security” and prohibiting any military contractors, suppliers, or partners from conducting commercial activities with the company.
This confrontation highlights growing tensions at the intersection of advanced AI development, national security, and corporate responsibility. As AI systems become more sophisticated, questions about consciousness, autonomy, and appropriate use cases have moved from theoretical discussions to matters of practical policy with significant implications for both technological development and national security.
The dispute also underscores the complex relationship between the tech industry and government, especially in emerging fields where ethical guidelines and regulatory frameworks are still evolving. For companies like Anthropic, balancing commercial interests with ethical concerns about their technology’s applications presents an increasingly difficult challenge, particularly when those concerns conflict with government priorities.
