Pence Defends Conservative Roots as Republican Party Faces Ideological Crossroads

Former Vice President Mike Pence has declared that preserving traditional conservative principles within the Republican Party is “the calling of my life right now,” as he positions himself as a voice against what he describes as a rise in populism and big government policies in the GOP.

In an exclusive interview, Pence challenged the widely held perception that former President Donald Trump has fundamentally transformed the Republican Party during his political ascendancy. “I’m convinced that while President Trump has changed some aspects of the agenda of the Republican Party, he hasn’t really changed the Republican Party,” Pence said from his Washington D.C. office at Advancing American Freedom, his expanding policy and advocacy organization.

The former vice president, who served during Trump’s first term before their relationship fractured over the January 6, 2021 Capitol riot, has been vocal about what he sees as concerning trends within the party. “We intend to be a voice for what conservatives believe and have always believed, and that’s fiscal responsibility, traditional values, strong defense and American leadership,” he emphasized.

While Pence praised certain aspects of Trump’s second administration, including border security efforts and the extension of Trump-Pence era tax cuts, he expressed concern about other policy directions. “I’ve been concerned about embracing more big government programs and solutions, price controls on pharmaceuticals and credit companies, taking a position in private companies, the nationalization trend that has emerged, as well as marginalizing the right to life,” Pence noted.

The former vice president also warned about what he termed “a scourge of some ‘-isms'” affecting the GOP, citing protectionism, isolationism, and fringe voices of antisemitism that he believes need to be confronted. “None of those things represent what conservatives believe,” he stated firmly.

However, veteran Republican strategist Ryan Williams challenged Pence’s assessment that Trump hasn’t transformed the party. “Donald Trump has tremendously altered the make-up of the Republican Party and the issues that it focuses on,” Williams told Fox News Digital. “He has altered the voter base of the Republican Party” and taken “the values and trajectory of this party in a different direction… It’s never going back to the way it was before.”

Pence’s mission appears not to return the party to its pre-Trump incarnation, but rather to remind Republicans of what he considers core principles. “Republicans believe in a strong national defense of American leadership in the world. We believe in free market economics and limited fiscally responsible government. We believe in the right to life and traditional values,” he said.

Amid challenging political headwinds for Republicans, with the party traditionally losing seats in midterm elections while facing economic concerns and Trump’s underwater approval ratings, Pence remains convinced that traditional conservatism offers both a practical and winning agenda.

His upcoming book, “What Conservatives Believe: Rediscovering the Conservative Conscience,” expected in June, will likely bolster his effort to reshape the party’s direction. The book follows his unsuccessful 2024 presidential bid, where he campaigned on traditional conservative principles against what he characterized as the “siren song of populism unmoored to conservative principles.”

That campaign never gained significant traction, and Pence suspended it after just four and a half months. When asked about future presidential ambitions, the former vice president didn’t close any doors. “I’m not a long-term planner,” he said. “We’ll let the future take care of itself.”

For now, Pence remains focused on advocating for the conservative values he believes will strengthen America. “Reminding our party and sharing with people across the country what conservatives believe and why it will make America stronger and more prosperous is really the calling of my time,” he concluded.
