Former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama have characterized the recent killing of Alex Pretti in Minneapolis as a “national wake-up call,” criticizing federal immigration enforcement tactics in Minnesota that they claim intimidate residents and operate without proper accountability.

In their joint statement issued Sunday, the Obamas connected Pretti’s death to weeks of escalating federal immigration operations in Minnesota that have triggered protests, controversy, and confrontations between local residents and federal agents. They argued that the broader response to the shooting demonstrates how these tactics have deepened divisions and heightened tensions across the nation.

According to Department of Homeland Security officials, Pretti, a 37-year-old Minneapolis resident who worked as a Veterans Affairs ICU nurse, was fatally shot by a Border Patrol agent during a pre-dawn immigration enforcement operation. The operation was targeting Jose Huerta-Chuma, who was identified as an undocumented immigrant with a criminal record.

DHS officials stated that Pretti approached agents while armed with a 9mm pistol and “violently resisted” when officers attempted to disarm him. He was pronounced dead at the scene. State officials confirmed that Pretti had a valid permit to carry a firearm.

“The killing of Alex Pretti is a heartbreaking tragedy. It should also be a wake-up call to every American, regardless of party, that many of our core values as a nation are increasingly under assault,” the Obamas said in their statement. They acknowledged that federal law enforcement and immigration agents have difficult jobs but emphasized that Americans expect them to carry out their duties lawfully and work cooperatively with state and local officials.

The former president and first lady claimed this cooperation is not happening in Minnesota, where they described seeing “masked ICE recruits and other federal agents acting with impunity and engaging in tactics that seem designed to intimidate, harass, provoke and endanger” city residents.

The Obamas’ statement referenced that these operations have now resulted in two fatal shootings of U.S. citizens. Besides Pretti, Renee Good, a Minneapolis mother of three, was shot and killed on January 7 by an ICE agent during another federal enforcement operation.

The couple criticized the Trump administration for failing to impose “some semblance of discipline and accountability” over agents deployed to Minnesota. They suggested that instead, officials appeared “eager to escalate the situation.” They also questioned the administration’s public explanations for both deaths, arguing that officials were drawing conclusions before thorough investigations had been completed.

“This has to stop,” the Obamas declared, calling on administration officials to reconsider their approach and work constructively with Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, as well as state and local police, to prevent further unrest while achieving legitimate law enforcement objectives.

The Obamas concluded their statement by encouraging Americans to support peaceful protests in Minneapolis and across the country, describing them as “a timely reminder that ultimately it’s up to each of us as citizens to speak out against injustice, protect our basic freedoms, and hold our government accountable.”

The incidents in Minneapolis have become a flashpoint in the ongoing national debate over immigration enforcement tactics, the balance between federal and local authority, and questions about accountability in law enforcement operations. Local officials, including Mayor Frey, have called for federal immigration agents to leave the city following the shooting.

The controversy comes amid heightened tensions nationwide over immigration policy and enforcement strategies, with significant political implications as debates over border security and immigration reform continue to divide policymakers and the public alike.
